re: Tundra and Carfax dilemma

What probably happened: Guy leases the car, brings it in for first free service, doesn’t like the dealer or lives a bit too far to keep going back for regular maintenance. Keeps doing regular maintenance on his own dime and everything is fine.
What might have happened: Guy leases a car so he doesn’t have to do squat for maintenance, gets the initial service for show and then drives it like a rental, loans it to his sixteen year old nephew and puts a half open can of Restore in the engine shortly before returning it.
You’re probably fine with this one but with any used vehicle you pay your dollar and take your chances

Could have changed his oil himself.
Maybe but that’s usually “free” with lease.
Was it grey with black rims? Sounds like my truck I traded in at end of year.

Unfortunately, he tried that. Upon making this request dealer will not allow it to go for an inspection. Oddly, the salesman said “yeah, I bet we can allow that.” Then the mgr wouldn’t. They said it was a liability issue, but it was another red flag to me.
That's a big red flag.
Like others, I suspect he did the oil changes himself or at an independent. I get the oil changed in my Tundra every 4-5k at several different places. But I've never had a sales manager say I could not take a car I was looking at for an inspection.

Even some independents end up on the carfax, I’ve found.

Frick that shite. 100% would walk away. If I'm paying thousands of dollars for something, its completely reasonable to want an unbiased professional opinion on it.

Don’t waste another minute on this negotiation. Walk away.

Yeah, frick that. I'd walk from that dealer on principle alone but there's probably a reason they don't want it inspected. They may suspect an issue or know of one that is not yet "documented." When the inspection reveals it they'll have to disclose to any other buyer or be in a world of shite.

Carfax is crap. I'm only 1 person and twice they have been wildly wrong and nearly impossible to get corrected.
I have owned 3 Tundras. I am pretty sure I have changed oil at a dealer maybe twice, ever, and only because it was there for some other reason or it was free. I have never leased a vehicle, but I don't believe you are actually bound to do anything at the dealership.
40k miles is nothing, I wouldn't be worried about anything on a 2021. Take it to a mechanic for a once over.
Just saw you posted that dealer won't allow it to be inspected. Why would they even have to know?
1>bring a mechanic with you. There are mobile mechanics that go to dealers, I have used one.
2>take it for a drive to a shop.
In the end, if they won't allow you to inspect it, walk away and don't do any business with that dealer. Eff em.

Problem can be that codes can be cleared and you are not guaranteed a clean look at reality. Biggest threat with a Tundra is the stupid arse SAIS problem they are plagued with. this could be a $3-5k fix unless you are willing to install the bypass kit.
Some sellers will reset codes and do the bare minimum of driving to get everything reset just so the buyer thinks there are no active codes.
But yeah, I can't get past the dealer not allowing an inspection. There are a million Tundras out there, move along and don't worry about it.

Biggest scheme in history of history. Only history reported is when a VIN is scanned at a participating dealer, insurance record, and DMV, etc.

if everything else checks out and the price is right I wouldn't let that alone keep me from buying it

Move on. There are so many other options out there that won’t have this issue to worry with.

Same here. I bought my Tundra used and it’s been perfect so I’m biased.

Service work done at a non dealer. That’s why it’s not on Carfax. It could be done correctly but there is no way of knowing. Some leases include maintenance so that would have to be done at the dealer. Some leases require maintenance to be done at dealer so they know it was maintained property when they take it back post lease.

Zero reason except they are trying to hide something.
Umm... No?
They simply don't want the headache of rechecking after old baw brings it somewhere else.
Let's say the independent shop decides to compression test the motor, that's 8 plus to check they didn't cross thread or over tighten.

Glad you posted this. And, I've enjoyed reading the responses as I've asked 2 different dealers locally about being able to bring vehicles to an independent mechanic to have pre-purchase inspections done. They both said "Yeah!", initially. But, then they both came out with "But they can't put it on a lift!"
I'm guessing they're saying this because there is a rumor/story going around here about a certain mechanic that left a vehicle on a lift overnight, only to return in the morning and the vehicle had fallen off...
