One thing everyone should note about this year is that there are fewer 2 yr old turkeys than last year. 2015 saw most areas in Louisiana and Mississippi have relatively low hatch rates. Less 2 yr old gobblers (who are generally more vocal than older birds) will result in less gobbling from older birds, and less gobbling heard overall regardless of the weather.

On a better note, last year was a really good hatch. There will be a lot of jakes seen this year. I would like to take a moment to encourage everyone to please not shoot jakes, regardless if it's legal where you are hunting.

I'm sure most on here hunt LA and South MS, but in 2015 North MS had a good hatch according to MS Dept. of Wildlife. I saw a ton of jakes last year where I hunt a friend's land in Tate County, MS.

I didn't see as many jakes as usual on my family's land in Greene County, AL last year, so I'm not as optimistic.

What's the source of that data? Haven't heard anything about that.

That was last year's article before the season that said there would be a lot of jakes last year. There could be areas that had good 2015 hatches, but SW Mississippi and the felicianas had bad hatches in 2015. I suppose I should have specified the area I was speaking of when I made the comment previously. It rained from April 12 2015 until June. Lots of nests were affected. I saw one jake last year in 35 hunts on 7 different properties plus public land. I know several other folks that hunt as much or more than me who saw the same thing.

I take the poult surveys with a grain of salt. They aren't very accurate and highly subjective and prone to error. You write down every turkey you see and how many poults are in there. If the poults are out in field you can count them fairly easily but in most areas the poults can be hard to see or may have already crossed out of view before you see them.

I didn't see hardly any poults this past year. Also a researcher put over 20 transmitters on hens at Peason and very very few had successful nests maybe one?

Listened tonight but didn't hear anything. Saw some good sized tracks on a 4 wheeler road. Hopefully get at least one gobble in the morning

Mine are hammering this morning. But I've got hens all over me, flying down and going straight to the gobblers.

Stay with them. Gotta hunt them like you are a coyote when they are like that.

Had a gobbling strutting jake and one hen at 10 steps on public ground. Good opener, plenty hunters but was able to find a bird to myself unfortunately he was a horny teenager... Oh well circling around now to another spot i heard one this morning see if he is killable now...

I'm not that kind of turkey hunter. I hunt 20-25 mornings a season. But if it's not a classic hunt off the limb, I usually just head for the office within an hour. I don't grind them out like I used to!

Copiah Co.

Set up in a usual good spot but heard nothing. Could hear two birds hammering about a mile away. Eventually I couldn't take it and made the hike. When I got to the area I snuck up to a plot and as I was getting there I saw one of the gobblers. He didn't spook but he slowly walked off with the other.

I went around to another area where I thought they might end up. Hour later they skirt the edge. I gave them a couple soft calls but nothing. Decided to back out after 20 min and try to set up on them tomorrow morning

Southwest MS. Claiborne County. I heard 4-5 this morning. They gobbled good on the roost, then maybe 6-8 times on the ground. I had to leave after about an hour.

One of my buddies also in SW MS heard one turkey gobble twice. Another buddy in SW MS heard one turkey gobble four times.

Two buddies in N Central MS froze their arse off and heard nothing.
