I know lots of folks had to deal with the vetch seed that was distributed this year with the hull still on it. I haven’t been up to look at mine recently so jury is still out, but we’ve had a ton of rain so I’m still optimistic. Anyone here confirmed this crap actually germinated?

I cycled my seed in and out the freezer for a couple of weeks prior to planting and my germination rate seems pretty normal

Not something I thought to do but makes sense. Did it seem to open the hulls up any, or was it just to mimic frost?

I planted about 20 bags of it. I am not happy with the results.

For various reasons I did a couple of things different this year. One is that rather than disking I tried to no till it with a drill. And I think I planted it too deep. Even though I set the drill so shallow that in some places it was barely scratching the surface.

So I have scattered vetch coming up in the drilled slits. And then I have a decent amount coming up from seed that fell outside the slits. And now I have some that is just emerging from the slits even though it was planted 7 weeks ago.

Next year I am going to disk and harrow smooth, then plant and roll in with a cultipacker. This is how I have gotten my best results in the past. I just can't tell enough to determine if the problem was the seed or not.

ETA: Our tractor was down for a wiring issue and JD spent the better part of three months replacing things that didn't need to be replaced, and then telling us it was fixed. And then picking it up again. And then putting us off while they tended to bigger farmers. And then ordering the wrong part.

I fricking hate those guys. I really do.

Yes it simulates frost seeding. The repetitive freezing and thawing softens the hull.

I planted close to 7 acres and it’s completely garbage! I might as well have flushed 2K down the toilet.

I’ll go back to cow peas next year.

Planted mine in early May. Nice stand and the deer are all in it.

Nothing came up, wasted $175 at Kentwoood Co-op.

Would love to hear what prompted the change. The co-ops were obviously fed the same line as us about it just taking longer.

Hopefully you see a big flush this week but I cut open a bag and took a pinch inside to examine, and I didn’t get a good feeling from it. It was not at all like a bean hull that splits when it dries, it was sealed tight and was thick for the tiny size of the seed. I’m guessing the hull has to rot in the soil before you get contact, which is gonna take a shitload of rain and warm temps, so not like we can just go to planting in march.
