I think everybody has a fair chase/challenge line in their mind. For some folks that’s a 10 acre food plot,a high fence, a heated blind, etc . For others it’s a recurve.
As long as it’s legal, I don’t think hunters should bitch about it. Hunters opposing each other will make the anti hunters job pretty easy.
Also, my dad has a ravin r20. I don’t know what you folks are talking about with a 40 yard shot. Just on speed alone a 40 yard shot with my compound would be the same as a 55 yard shot with the ravin. Not to mention the accuracy on that crossbow is insane.

With regards to Primitive Weapons, it needs to be brought back in line. A recurve has an effective range, in the hands of a normal archer of 30-35 yds. A compound, in the hands of a normal archer, 40-45 yds. That's less than a 25% increase in effective, accurate range for the majority of both categories. Yes, back when I shot ASA, IBO and NFAA 3D tourneys I was confident enough to take a 50-60 yd shot under the right conditions, but I never did. And that was with multiple state championships in all those under my belt. Regarding muzzleloaders, the old muzzle -loaders have an accurate /effective range of probably @50 yds. The modern versions shooting sabots are effective to about 200 yds...that's a 300% increase in the range of the "primitive weapon" and puts it squarely into normal rifle range...even more than a 30-30 would shoot. Not very primitive IMHO.
This. I know guys that hunt with a 35 Whelen all year because there is virtually no difference in shooting that versus their old 30-06. If there's really not that much difference, why even have a special season for it. Just make regular rifle season a month longer. If you really want to make primitive weapons, a thing. Limit it to black powder, or single shot straight wall cartridges, and no scopes. Iron sights only.
I don't have a huge issue with crossbows, but I'd rather use a bow. As long as people realize that just because it'll shoot a hundred yards, doesn't mean you should take the shot. I can shoot out to 70 easy with my compound but I'm not taking a shot at a deer that far. I don't have the confidence that I can make an ethical shot. Maybe I'd get lucky and get the deer, or maybe I wouldn't, and the deer ends up dying a slow painful death.

Can you explain this to me?

How can you not understand it?
I guess I understand "how" it's the "why" part that gets me.
I hunt with a .270 but don't get mad at a guy using a 30-06. Seems like a pretty good analogy.

You know exactly why there was a fight over this when it was brought up. You know why the Bayou State Bowhunter's org. fought it. You know all the differences between the two platforms. You know who chose to take advantage of the early season before crossbows, and who suddenly decided to after the change.
That, or I overestimated your thinking abilities

Bowhunters wanting to keep the woods empty in the early season.
But is it really that much of a problem? I honestly do not know anyone that hunts with a crossbow.

I did. I just don't personally see it.
And I hunt in a bow only area. I've never seen anyone with a crossbow.

I watched a guy walk under me at Cocodrie and kill a yurlin' the very first year they were allowed.
