Holy shite, glad he didn't tag you there. I've spent so much time in West Texas, I have seen hundreds of WDB but I have never seen a black-tailed rattlesnake, I guess I was just north of their range.
That one definitely could’ve tagged me more than once if he wanted to… but if he wanted to, I wouldn’t have been handling him. I’m the first to admit that’s not a 100% foolproof method
Our best night for rattlers was 3 black-tails and 1 WDB in one night. While the WDBs tend to like a variety of habitats, I think the black-tails like the mountains and rocky areas.
ETA: I didn’t realize how close he got til I got back to the hotel and watched the videos, but he didn’t strike at all. When you have them hanging down like that, their tendency is to head upward. If you support the middle of their body more, they are more relaxed.

Love your post. I lived in SA for a little less than a year and routinely make my way out there. I used to work south of SA when I lived there. I usually come to hunt turkeys or see family now but I spend time to the north and west. I know that type of desert is not everyone’s cup of tea but I tell my wife all the time I could live there in retirement.
When I worked there I was on pipeline construction projects. We would trench and there would be massive snakes falling into the trenches. They called them blue runners. For whatever reason the rattlesnakes knew better for the most part.

Awesome pics! Truly seems like a gift to get to live out your hobby all over the place. Thanks for sharing.
But, I will admit that when I read
The snakes and lizards are safer.

I might eventually get bit, but it won’t be from stupid shite like that.
My two friends who were bitten recently both got bit while trying not to let the snake get away - not by handling after the catch. We do need to do better in that regard - I grabbed several fleeing venomous snakes by the tail this trip. You get caught up in the excitement and don’t want to let one get away. But we ended up with multiples of every venomous species we caught, so no individual catch was worth the risk of a bite.

I was just messing with you and I really do like to see and hear about your adventures. There's way to much primal fear inside of me to touch one of those. I don't kill them when I see them, but I also don't go anywhere near them either. Like they can have 500 square feet of whatever it is they are on when I see them.

You’re right though - I probably will get bit eventually. I’m pretty new to free handling and took way too many liberties this trip. After a while you start feeling invincible and cocky and keep pushing the limits. Eventually you run into those limits. But the hobbies with the most danger are unfortunately the most fun.
