Come on man. No matter what happened on impact, the Minie ball was not a hollow point. It was a fairly soft lead bullet with a hollow butt so it could expand and touch the rifling.
Hollow Point...

Now go over wounds for both of them.
Mini ball and hollow points basically had the same effect on the human body. So back to my original statement. In the Cvil War they were basically shooting hollow points at each other.
I know this is a very tough concept for some to grasp. But you can basically say back then that a Round Ball was equivalent to shooting a full metal jacket today and a mini ball was equivalent to shooting a hollow point today.

It led to battle field gridlock and trenches since new tactics had to be devised.
Artillery contributed more to trench warfare than anything else.

Well rifled barrels made the Civil War casualties so high. The tactics hadn't caught up yet
This is a pretty good answer. Rifled barrels gave round balls accurate range to about 200 yards, but we're slow to load. Add the minie ball, which was slightly under sized so that it would load quickly and with little force, and range increased to around 600 yards.
Civil war casualties were ridiculously high. Tactics did start to change after a while. Mostly defensively.

The cartridge and firing pin in conjunction with the internal magazine.
Made muzzle loaders obsolete and increased rate of fire exponentially.
See needle guns.
