I just hold it like I'm fishing and barely tap the tip on the floor and just see what it feels like. Hardly scientific but I know when I like one and when I don't like one.

fast tip will help...but also the materials the rod and eyes are made of plays an important part as well. also just learning a feel for it. When fishing SP learning to fish slow feeling the fish pick up the bait and watching the line start to move.

Agreed I have gotten away from that as well, there are plenty of good brands out on the market right now that come in at or under 100.00

I like the fast action because it gives you the bend near the tip if the rod but still has a lot of backbone to get good hooksets . i use medium action on almost everything else other than jigs and carolina rigs .

IF you fish every weekend, I could see putting down some coin on rods, if you're out there 1-2 days a month, there are some fantastic rods around the $100 mark.

To the OP: For strictly worms in shallow water, M action, F tip. Heavier soft plastics or in deeper water, use MH action with a F tip.

if you plan on fishing around cypress trees a lot, I would not go over 7'. it is really hard to cast/flip underhand from the deck of the boat without hitting the water mid-cast.. makes it impossible to get up under trees. just my $.02

had a guy recommend Phenix rods to me the other day.... specifically the Ultra MBX line. I have to say... I was quite impressed when I looked at them. im just not a fan of split grips

eta: also, if you purchase a $200 rod. be prepared to replace your entire lineup. they are a different breed of rod and it will spoil you quickly.
eta2: Med Heavy

I have a 6'9" kistler for this exact reason . I use a 7'6" when flipping docks though . I also keep 6'6" crankbait and spinnerbait rods for fishing in cypress trees to .

7' MH can't do you wrong, I just replaced just about all my rods with ducketts, best bang for the buck and real sensitive(also get a sweet deal through a buddy)

I like a 7' M fast for weightless

Good info! I saw where you posted about a bow hunting place you hangout. It wouldn't be TBH would it?
