This was a sick female, you don't think 3 large dogs could fend it off.
Size of my lab and all my GS were bigger than that.
Old and weak, what they prey on.
FYI, that is the world record wolf in that pic, 230lbs which is huge. Previous record in 175.

Thousands of years of natural selection > any domesticated canine (physically and mentally)

Besides, as fierce as wolves are, they are built for stamina and working in packs. Alone, they are timid and avoid conflict.
This isn't always true. Lone wolves will attack. They have a different fighting tactic than a domesticated dog, but don't mistake their methods of fighting for being timid.
Their head, jaw, teeth, bit is larger and stronger than a god. Teeth are built for crushing bone. Wolves are much more intelligent than dogs, and use it to their advantage.

I stood next to a full taxidermied wolf at my local bow shop and was amazed at their size. I wouldn't want to tangle with one.

Spotted Hyena vs. Grey Wolf

Ridiculous. I hope you guys realize that certain dogs were created to protect livestock from wolves and lions.

does your dog hunt to provide its food?
does it have to fight off other predatory competition?
does one wrong move result in death?
does it go for days with no food?
is it hunted?
if you answer no, your dog has no chance, I have three large malamutes, I want no part with a wolf

I think you'd be disappointed. I've seen a wolf chase off a brown bear. They are tenacious fighters. Wolves have adapted to hunt, and their teeth are built to crush bones. Large wolves can be between 130 and 175 lbs but are graceful and have excellent hunting and killing skills.
Wolf vs dog(s) isn't a fair fight.
I have a feeling the poster claiming his dog could beat a wolf has pit bulls.
One wolf would make short work of two pit bulls.

Reading this thread reminded me of either a story I read or an urban legend about a man killing (I think by choking it out) a wolf. I think it had got into his house or something. Anybody remember this?

I think everyone saying the wolf is the definitive winner against all dogs is naive. Sure the average pet that doesnt have to "survive" day to day would be at a disadvantage but that being said some breeds are just major badasses. I have Boerboels and without looking it up i know their bites are going to be stronger than the wolf. Not to mention they are extremely athletic. Its truly funny to hear the average pit/lab/retriever/boxer owners putting their two cents in about domestic dogs when they have never lived with and/or observed a large breed and what they are capable of.

not many dogs can handle a wolf, very few actually. I am going pick up one that potentially can pretty soon, an anatolian shepherd

a hyena would destroy a wolf.

You have more than one of these? Jeez dude, start a thread and post some pics. I want to see these pups you have. That is a big arse dog.

I mean really? This is awesome, I want that dog in the backseat when I go through the drive thru at Popeyes.

Anatolian Shepherd, Caucasian Ovcharka, Kangal, Boerbels, and any large bandogge has a great chance against a wolf.
