I see tons of baby bream along the banks
Two words that will help this problem.
Bread
Castnet.
Throw out bread along the bank, wait for bream to come, throw castnet.

As to why? Hell, they both live together in the wild.

Well, my pond is about 10 years old and both are doing fine. Now I do have to keep the bream in check. Castnet is the trick and catching and throwing them on the bank helps.

I've always heard that the young sac-au-lait/crappie/white perch are very aggressive feeders and feed on the same thing baby bass feed on. Also, they will not eat their own offspring, but love baby bass, which is why they can hurt the bass population.

Somebody needs to tell the white crap-au-laits in our ponds this because we have a ton of young bass.

Yeah, that's not the problem. The problem is, there's nothing to check the perch population. Once they move out to open water, they are pretty safe.

Not when I'm fishing.

The problem with bass and sac-a-lait in the same pond is their breeding. Sac-a-lait spawn earlier in the season and the offspring spawn at a younger age than bass do. Therefore, sac-a-lait produce more offspring over their lifespan and the fry they produce are in the water and feeding before the bass fry. Therefore the sac-a-lait, especially the young ones, are at a competitive advantage for shared food sources. As a result, the sac-a-lait will overpopulate a pond if they are not managed. It's not that bass and sac-a-lait can't coexist, it's just not ideal for producing consistent quality bass. After a few years, the end result will be stunted bass and sac-a-lait populations mainly due to the overpopulation of sac-a-lait. It's not impossible to manage this situation, but it involves removing every sac-a-lait that is caught.

I guess the bass have such a head start on ours that's never been a problem. I killed thousands of stunted bass but the only crappie I catch are huge and older. Now the bass have finally gotten big enough but we never had even a hint of crappie taking over. Would have loved to have that 'problem'.
