Right NOW there is only 1 answer and it’s 308. Is the only ammo other than 350 bush, and 6mm (not 6.5) creedmore Ive seen in every hunting/gun store in EBR triparish area.

No love for the .30-30? I love my old Marlin lever action.

Why would he want to limit himself to 150 yards by hunting with a .30-30? The action is can’t hold a candle to the accuracy of a bolt action. It isn’t as safe as a bolt action. If you must go with an anemic old round in a lever action, go with the 35 REM, 38-55 WIN, 375 WIN, or a 444. Better yet, get the 358 WIN in a Browning BLR if you must run a lever.
A .308 or a 7mm-08 in a bolt action is the perfect deer rifle for 90% of Southern deer hunting situations.

7mm08

Both of my sons hunt with 7MM-08 rifles. 7mm-08 is a great round but i have not be able to find ammo since the start of the covid mess.

.308 is the round to go with.

I shoot a 7-08 but am also thinking of getting a 308. I see ammo for 7-08 now but it's expensive. Sgammo used to sell boxes of PPU for about $15. It's not 3x that.

I find myself really wanting a 280 AI (ackley improved). I am also drawn to ta fast 6.5; either 6.5 prc or 6.5-300 or 6.5-257. I already have two .257 weatherbys and there isn’t much difference and I just can’t justify it. When I shoot out the barrel of one of them I may get it rebarreled in 6.5-300, or .6.5-257. For now I am leaving them alone. But I have a blue remington 700 in .30/06, and a stainless one in .270 that I never use. The .270 has never even been shot. There is a good chance one of those two, probably the stainless action, will have a new barrel in 280 AI by next year. I also like the 30 prc; but I have a 30 wsm in a hunting rifle and a 300 win mag in a long range gun, and just can’t justify it. But that .280 AI, surely I need it. I can get 7 mag performance in a nonbelted case. Plus I already have tons of bullets since I already load 7mm/08 and 7 rem mag. Yeah, I think I need a 280 AI.

.270 is the best round out there. Shoots flat and straight and hits hard.

You do need the 280 AI. Factory ammo available now.

I think you need a .338-06 or a 35 whelen instead of a little old arse 280 AI.

Quit messing with those little tiny bullets and come over to the dark side. Big hole in the barrel makes the gun lighter.

I have a want for a 458 win mag. I have zero practical purpose for one, but I would definitely shoot a deer with it. Therfore, I amend my original answer to 458 win mag.

I love my 28 nosler. Ammo availability sucks though . 280 Ackely improved would be my next choice .

A standard 300 would be the best all around IMO.

Wayyyyy overkill

Everything after 7mm08 starts being overkill for deer IMO. Drastic overkill starts when you pass up .30-06

300 win mag might be the perfect lower 48 caliber, but its a howitzer for swamp donkies.
