Find a used Remington 870 express magnum youth model 20 gauge, or even 12 gauge. It has a smaller barrel length and youth stock. However, people say Remington has gone down hill in recent years ( I can't speak to that personally), but mine that I got around 2002 is the perfect shotgun and has been through hell and back and works fine. Most gun stores have tons of used 870s, and they can probably tell you the year model each is. Get the magnum so he can throw some high brass 3 inch shells in there for shooting ducks or turkeys and the low brass 2 3/4 shells for squirrels and such. Although, I will say it has some kick to it, sometimes I think more so than my full size pump 12 gauges.

I got mine the youth `1187 about 4 years ago, it has a 21 inch barrel that I think is way too short of a barrel on it. I didn't feel safe with him in a field next to me or in a duck blind. That barrel was just too damn close to ears for my comfort. I just bought him the Montefeltro. He handles it much, much much better. He is 11, but strong as a baby bull.
I have bought my last youth gun.

I bought my son a Stoeger M3020 youth model. Great little gun for the money.

I had a youth winchester 1300 in 20ga when I started duck hunting at 12. I used it a season and a half until one hunt we forgot the 20ga shells. I used my dad's 12ga Browning A5 that day and never went back to the youth gun or 20ga. If you already have the 870 20ga I'd look into getting a youth stock and 24" barrel off gunbroker or similar and save the money for a 12ga for him in a year or so.

See how he shoulders a M3020. My wife loves hers and I toted it a few times during turkey season

I hunt with the affinity (12g) and it is light as a feather and shoulders well. It kicks like a damn mule though. My 11-87 is heavy as a brick with no recoil.

I just bought my son a TriStar 20 ga from Walmart and he loves it. Tore up the squirrels last weekend.
I shot it some too and it’s a great gun for a young one.

I bought my daughter a Tristar probably 10 years ago. She’s in college and still shoots it. Great rabbit gun too.

I would get o\u in 20 gauge . Very seldom use 3rd shot unless it's a cripple . Lighter gun and shoulders great for kids . Bought a stoeger condor and I love it . Reasonably priced .

Bought mine the Yildiz 20G O/U youth model. It's been a great gun for him so far. He's 10 and skinny as a rail.
