That isn't the only way military move humans.
A former unit flew 89 missions after Katrina into Louis Armstrong or Navy New Orleans.
Carrying MP/SP types in and evacuees out.
KC135 C130 and C17 all flew hundreds of sorties in and out hauling people in and out to include cargo.
But you're talking about special circumstances. It's like the war zone example. In this case, you're just trying to get people out by any means possible.

In all seriousness I wouldn’t be surprised if the C-17 was just on a training mission. The military may well use that airstrip regularly to practice assault landings and things like that.

Which way would you move potential violent detainees.
Coach on southwest onesies twosies then van them to the location .
Or a C17 with the ability to shackle numerous detainees and fly them first direct to that airfield?

An alligator can easily kill an adult human with just one chomp of its massive powerful jaws, ~ 2500 ft-lbs of bite force. And I don't want to think about being crushed to death and swallowed whole by one of Florida's hundreds, if not thousands of invasive pythons. And-- there are American CROCODILES in the Everglades too.
So yea, it's more than a deterrent-- it's the psychological equivalent to medieval torture threats. It has no place in modern international jurisprudence.

They could, ya know, just not try to leave
It’s not like ICE is making them walk through the swamp just to see how many get eaten just for fun.

When would this ever be a concern of someone detained at the facility?

Yeah and that's why I wouldn't want to go swimming with them. But they will usually just try to get away from you if given the chance.
You're acting like they'll be in danger of these things eating and attacking them while they are there. Like something is going to snatch them into the abyss if they get to close to the edge or something. That's just not the case.
I don't even find the thing to be scary at all. It's the fricking mosquitos in Florida that I hate the most. That's how you torture someone.
