Multiple steps:
1) The manufacture of Chips is highly specialized with large cost of entry (clean rooms, equipment with very high specs for tolerances, etc)
2) COVID shutdown meant car manufacturers closed down assembly lines and cancelled (postponed?) chip orders
3) Consumer electronics ADDED to their orders (more people working from home, buying new computers, etc)
4) Now, Car makers are asking for their orders again...but, the chip manufacturers are fulfilling all the orders for the "other" chips that were contracted (NOT cancelled)
Car manufacturers' short-sightedness caused their own issue. But, it is not an issue of the Chinaman declaring a war

Just wait until pharm drugs, vaccines etc do the same. Then the sheep may have a different opinion of China

Anyway, when we’re imposing heavy tariffs against China, do you seriously think China won’t retaliate by refusing to sell goods to the US?
I think the trade war with China is a good thing. But just like the US in acting in our best interest by imposing tariffs, China is acting in their best interest by retaliating. I’m not going to place some moral blame on China here.

And as already mentioned most of these chips are manufactured in Taiwan
It's also known that fires in Taiwan and Japan at chip manufacturing facilities compounded the chip shortage problem
If China was the one selling the chips they would be shooting their own selves in the foot by not selling them to us
Also as already mentioned, wtf is he talking about with lithium?

China is not retaliating on this issue
You think China is refusing to sell us something that they have?

Gain a monopoly on essential components of new cars.
Get government to mandate tighter emissions restrictions and eventually electric cars that require more essential electrical components.
Well done China

You should embrace a conspiracy theory or 2, Powerman. You might actually see what is really happening around you.

The reaction from China was swift, with a report on Friday by China's Global Times saying Beijing was ready to put U.S. companies on an "unreliable entity list," as part of countermeasures in response to the new limits on Huawei.
The measures include launching investigations and imposing restrictions on U.S. companies such as Apple Inc, Cisco Systems Inc and Qualcomm Inc, as well as suspending purchases of Boeing Co airplanes, the report said here citing a source.

I have no problem with fewer Americans buying vehicles they can’t afford.

I agree, I do think people will wake up. But it’s going to be too late when it happens.

was car shopping at a Honda dealership yesterday and the sales person told me about the chip shortage.
Maybe it would be a good idea to incentivize manufacturers to make chips in America and not be dependent on Chy-na. Create some good paying jobs.
Crazy idea

It's funny how Obama pushed the "Cash for Clunkers" program. A lot of those cars were not "Clunkers" per se, but they didn't have computers in them. Hmmm.... makes you wonder why they really wanted those cars scrapped.

The global supply chain is exceedingly stupid.
There are now thirty steps involved in producing a good, and getting it to the customer, and so it’s incredibly vulnerable to disruption.
We don’t adequately plan or price for that.
And that’s not to mention our strategic and economic interest in being self sufficient.

Here’s also the thing and I’m rarely one to defend China, but there are shite tons of container ships along the West Coast filled with these chips, cars, hardware, equipment, etc, but those dumb frick governors on the West Coast (Gavin Newsom in particular) have limited the capacity of the docks to a third of their capacity.
Business owners are pissed just looking across the water at dozens of container ships knowing the products they’ve purchased are just sitting out there and there’s nothing they can do about it. Out here in the Western half of the United States every business owner is pissed at that dumb frick of a governor who is fricking over all the other economies.
Hopefully with California finally opening back up this will change, but from what I’m hearing it’s going to take until July 2022 for things to get back to normal in the west since everything is on extreme back order right now thanks to those 3 idiot governors.

Anecdotal, but my wife and I have both noticed the lack of new cars on car lots lately. Could just be a regional thing, though.

Yeah, save for the pandemic itself, China isn’t to blame for this specifically. Its the Pacific Coast governors that are to blame, with Newsom being 80% of the problem.

If they haven't woken up by now, they're not going to. These people are fricking stupid. It takes a fricked up brain to support what's going on at the border, illegals getting things citizens don't get, selling out everything in this country to your #1 enemy and not having a problem with it, framing American President's then cheering on impeachment. They are fricking retarded if they made it this far and can't figure things out.

I think there is an increase in disposable spending combined with a decrease in supply due to labor / material shortages.
Because all these fricking idiots getting stimulus money and/or unemployment seem to be blowing it on stupid shite they can’t afford.

If this is true (and I'm not saying I have any reason to doubt it), it's fricking insane.
