If Trump would have tackled the issue head on it would not be an issue right now.
It simply goes like this:
Don't call your supporters "stupid," "foolish," and "weaklings" and "this is going to hurt a lot of innocent people".
Just say "I support releasing the Epstein files and encourage congress to pass legislation to allow the DOJ to overcome legal hurdles to have the files released. I'm for full transparency."
See how easy that is?
With that direct approach all this internecine GOP fighting could have been avoided. Politically it was really a colossal unforced error.

Not exactly, but close. The files were never important because powerful Democrats may have been in them. While the Republicans are in power, there was a small chance that Donald Trump was in them so it was of the utmost importance. Surprise, he was in them. He told the FBI about Epstien, nobody wants to talk about that. Unverifiable and quite frankly not even believable rumors about him? That's what Democrats want to focus on.
They are evil, they don't care about truth. They want everything done on their terms and anything else is unacceptable.

If not, then an honest person would have to admit that he wasn't serious about it until his tiff with Trump. And a rational person would have to admit that his tiff with Trump was the catalyst for him finally becoming serious.

He did not. He also didn't have a Republican majority during Biden's term or a POTUS that campaigned partially on releasing the files.
