As I recall John John's crash was not due to mechanical malfunction. It was pilot error. John John was not the brightest bulb in the lamp.

He was supposed to have followed a flight plan keeping him in sight of the coastline until a certain point then crossing over to Martha's Vineyard. He would have seen lights the whole time and had references the whole time.
When he decided to take the short cut he was flying in the dark. Since he wasn't IFR rated he didn't know what to do. Spatial disorientation killed him and his family.

No. 4-5 flunkages is Sheila Jackson-Lee dumb. Took JFK Jr. three tries. If he'd not passed the third one, he couldn't be a NY prosecutor. Soon after, he was a NYC prosecutor.
