Individual liberty my arse. Don't confuse it with Libertarianism. I'd be riding hard for conservatism if it gave an ounce of care about individual liberty.

I find it ironic when "conservatives" advocate for the "Fair Tax" (23% consumption tax with prebates) and rail against tariffs (which are consumption taxes on specific imports) to respond to unfair trade practices with trading partners.

One of those gives more power to the federal government than the other. Do you know which one?

Look, ALL taxes are bad but tariffs are FAR less insidious than progressive marginal income taxes.

How?

According to econ, we stop manufacturing the things that we cant produce efficiently as others.

We passed basic manufacturing to pursue high tech economy. Y'all can complain all you want about it, but the working class better learn new skills and advance.

Cheaper products help the poor more than jobs that have to compete globally.

We can. But is that in our national interest?

Steel? Are you okay with China controlling our supply of steel?

Aluminum? Are you okay with China controlling our supply of Aluminum?

Pharmaceuticals? Are you okay with China controlling the supply of antibiotics and over the counter NSAIDs?

Computer chips? Are you okay with Taiwan controlling the supply of silicon computer chips contained in every piece of electronic device we own?

When I say tariffs I say implement them as appropriate to protect national interests.

When you hear tariffs you think CATO Institute description of Smoot-Haley.

So you are saying that he should just let criticism of his cognitive skills go unanswered because people do not understand that this has really been Obama's third term?

Why give BS the time of day? You are just keeping it alive and getting it even more noticed. But Trump is Trump.

Well yeah, read this forum. That's how populists approach tariffs. They focus on "save our jobs" and pretend that they're a net positive or cost neutral at worst.

No MAGA supporters are advocating for 67% tariffs against Canada. In fact all MAGA wants is reciprocity. Free trade is the goal and making it fair is how you get there. USMCA is a good example of that approach.

When China is dumping and manipulating their currency the worst thing to do is sit in the corner of the room and cuck out.

The US is moving swiftly towards a high tech economy that is mostly dominated by liberals. The other side better get with the program soon rather than begging big gov to protect muh jobz.

Depends on what you think our national interest really is. I think its enabling people to be the best version of themselves and live the way they choose to live.

I dont see how making rubber dog shite will save us if the worlds economy crashes, to be honest.

We can gear up and produce quickly if needed in cases of high tech products or medicines.

MAGA could change this with purchasing choices all by itself, if its adherents were disciplined and purchased only American products with American components.

You just said national security was the goal. Which is it, and if it's "free trade" you need to define what you mean by that.

China's currency manipulation allows it to accumulate more foreign exchange reserves, especially US $$. It then uses those reserves to purchase US debt.

Let you in on a secret. These debt purchases help our government fund budget deficits and keep interest rates low.

In this one thread you went from pretending to be an expert on cognitive decline and the human brain, an astute political theorist, and now finally an economist that rivals Friedman.

When the likes of STDTiger and cajunangelle are in agreement with your positions, you should probably reexamine your understanding of a topic.

Just saying

China is a disaster already in the process of occurring.

Their subsidizing of the cheap shite people buy is a loss for them at this time.

"We need to do something" is how we ended up with an overly regulatory environment with incredible expense.

Maybe, depends on the nominee.

Trump will never be the most conservative candidate. Hes a 1960 Democrat.
