I already got my benefit long ago and repaid it with interest. It’s our future children / grandchildren I’m concerned with. We need to keep higher education available to those with potential but limited means.
It needs to be done in a manner which precludes fraud and incentivizes actually finishing your degree and in a program where there is an actual benefit to society and also addresses keeping tuition costs down.
Penalties ( higher interest rates or surcharges) for students who drop out, restrictions on which degree programs are eligible, and some kind of penalties on the institutions which keep raising tuition out of line with actual costs should be able to accomplish this.
Putting the institutions on the hook for financing the loans instead of the taxpayers sounds like an excellent idea for eliminating tuition inflation.

It’s a loan. Not a hand out.

Not sure I buy that, there are really smart people that can do good things for society that can’t afford college. What needs to happen is that the university system is overhauled, added classes that do nothing and faux degrees. That’s what has cause college educations to sky rocket and become utterly unaffordable. Start there, you’ll see student loans straight out a bit.

I think fedral student loans and Dept of Education need to all be abolished.
It’s too many trashy ghetto folks getting degrees in useless libral arts and then acting like they made it to upper class with the rest of us good working class white family men. They need to remain in their place and we elites remain in ours. It’s too much class minglin goin on.

This will be interesting. Schools have jacked prices due to mass amount of building new buildings, inflated salaries for tenure and admin positions while paying adjuncts pennies, because they know they can fill classes with kids who took out government loans. And then supplement that free money with foreign(chinese and indian) students who can't get loans and have to pay cash, thus actually keeping very qualified potential students out. Meanwhile with all of this money they are raking in, they stuff it in their endowments while never using it, claiming they have no money then demanding more money from the taxpayer. Corrupt as hell.

In 1988 out of state tuition at GT was $1500 per quarter, so $4500 per year. That's $13,584 in today's dollars, current tuition for GT is $34,174. That's not sustainable.
The reality is there is no need to spend $34,000+/year for an engineering degree. It is propaganda.
In state tuition for LSU, UGA, and GT is ~$12,000/year.

get rid of student loans entirely
I disagree. Been on my own since I was 16. I went to Jr College 1st b/c it was less expensive & I was able to pay it myself. After JC I had to get a loan. I would get a loan for 1 semester, & pay it off the following semester. Repeat.
The issue is these people not working to pay on the loan while they're in school & it overwhelms them once they're out. Priorities.

Obama’s moving the loan programs served several of his purposes. Not the least of which was setting up his cronies and Dem contributors as “administrators” of the program so they collected fees for every loan. Recall you had a new loan for every semester under that system.
Also helped further establish federal government control over the schools and in turn relieved the banks and schools from any liability for bad loans.
One of his first actions on becoming President. A massive giveaway to Dem donors

How does that get fixed?
First, provide clear information on the cost of college, and what the job opportunities and expected salaries with those degrees can bring. Student has to pass a test on this, to prove they understand.
Provide the same for the trades. Not everyone should go to college, for many, the trades would be a better path. Not just for people who aren't that great at academics - those skills can be applied in the trades as well.
Maybe DOGE can get into college expenditures/efficiency. Why did ti go up faster than inflation?

but how many 18 year olds can afford college these days?
If the government wasn't backing the handing out of free money to colleges then it would not cost as much.
The college doesn't care...they get paid if you fail or pass.

Careful..they are gonna see what a small % of those actually end up with a degree (or payback).
