Pelosi called for his staff to have an intervention against him(25th, that tried and failed already). He played the hand like he has done for 3+ years. Everyone's first reaction is how he fricked up and did it wrong. Then lo and behold he comes out on top.

Not really. Tillerson's major problem was that he complained when Trump would announce policy and policy changes without advising Tillerson before the announcement, which Tillerson thought undermined his effectiveness.

I serve at the pleasure of my boss and I promote his vision for our company. When he changes directions(which is often) I provide cover and relay that vision. I don't undermine him to save my arse, if I want/need to do that then I should start my own company or seek employment elsewhere.
Tillerson got shown the door and rightfully so.
