The reason I laugh of course is because the distinction is trivial and morally insignificant and in the previously healthier politics of years past would be politically insignificant too, but also in our world now seems to matter politically hence it's an ongoing trope of reactionary politics. *weeps*

Sometimes the most honest comfort is knowing it won’t always be your problem, but we can at least hope whoever inherits it after we pass has the decency to feel as bad about the world as we do.
