Look, I believe that he was a major player in moving money, business and influence around the world. I believe he worked for many including the CiA. I believe this is why they will never allow anyone down that rabbit hole. He was active for almost four decades. He knew a lot. What his island was is fairly known but the capability of having recorded everything could not have been unknown to him and others. Was he gathering a form of protection or did they all think he was safe and untouchable and pushed things too far too much in the open.
