There is no doubt a minority of people on food stamps who deeply appreciate it and view it as temporary. Then there's the incredibly entitled people who are on generational welfare.

Maybe if a generation of these kids grew up never eating an Oreo cookie it would motivate some of them to get off welfare and do better for themselves.

Restrict it to staple items. Mark them just like they mark WIC in the grocery aisle. Nobody will starve.

What we need to do is being back the shite stigma of being on welfare. No ebt cards. Bring back the coupon book. Have a once a month pickup at a designated spot. You get your months ration of canned meat, veggies, flour, eggs, beans, rice. Base level shite. No snacks. No drinks. No candy. No chips. You get base ingredients. You run out by the end of the month? Tough shite.

SNAP was created to be a program that supplements the food budget for an individual/family. It was never intended for what it has morphed into - which is where people are using it as their sole food budget. The problem is that SNAP benefits for an individual with either no income, or incredibly low income, provides them with monthly food benefits that are higher than many of us spend on ourselves

Bingo! The benefit amounts should be a hardship. I've seen cases where a single mother of two was getting $800/month. You can eat like a freaking king on that kind of grocery money.

Lower the benefits. Although, I think they exist as corporate subsidy and a carrot to dangle the poor voter. It wasn't designed to "help" the beneficiary.

Lots of 60" tvs and auto accessories, little food. Poor people generally stay poor by making poor decisions.

I eat on $40 a WEEK. I would kill for $800 a month. Idk what on earth I'd buy but I'd gain 30 lbs within weeks.

I agree but still think cash is a better option if it weakens the bureaucracy.

To get $800 a month you'd need to have like a family of 6.

Pretty sure these ppl don't get much, which is a good thing

I was listening to a local station in MS this weekend and I think it was the governor that was on. They passed a bill that required people to take some form of job training (for free) to be eligible for food stamps. They had 80,000 less people either qualify or apply in 2016. That sounded aweful high, but I am pretty certain I heard it right. That's quite a bit of savings for the state.

I've always though that the most effective way to truly help those in need would be to simply give them cash

If you truly believe this, then clean out you checking account and walk around giving poor people your cash. Show us by example how well your idea works.

I thought people were already giving cash payments to panhandlers. How is that working out?

A Black Politician justified leaving the program alone because there are no grocery stores in large areas in the projects.
No wonder, a food store can't compete with snack food shops.
Eliminate the snack food and a grocery store would replace it.

I think we should have a "workfare" system and then just pay them cash. In a workfare system, I think it makes sense to ensure that getting a private sector job is more beneficial to everyone.

In other words, the question is not, "Do I sit on my arse and collect $20K in benefits, or do I get a job and earn $20K? it should be, do I work at a dead end workfare job for $20K forever, or do I find a regular job that may have some potential for promotion and that I might enjoy?

Nothing is more frustrating that seeing people check out with carts full of frozen pizzas and two liters of coke and then swiping an EBT card.

Oh there are more frustrating things than that. Cutting out or cutting way back the percentage of sales grocery stores make from EBT cards would force them to increase margins as they lose volume, so your prices would go up. But hey at least those freeloaders will get what's coming to them, right? Cutting off our noses to spite our faces is always a good move, I say.

Walmart has made their fortune off food stamps. It's corporate welfare

Bright orange sand bags in 5 pound increments redeemable for staples - and Metamucil (because government cheese).

Giving people money has been shown to be ineffective. Means tested tax credits have been more effective as they encourage work.

1. Not everyone who is poor is also dumb.

2. "Invest" in this context does not specifically refer to the stock market.

I don't give money to panhandlers. Maybe I wasn't explicit enough, but I do believe that all social program funding should be decreased along with all taxes.
