It's a nice thought, but more likely to wind up with a dead officer and even less information for the swat team to work with than anything else.

I think they had to clear each floor on the way up. Should have gotten a sniper with a Barret .50 cal to take out the shooter IMO

Each department has totally different training so it's hard to tell. Breaching a door by yourself isn't a smart idea though. You could easily just get a master key and open the door to the room, but they probably had to evacuate the rooms adjacent to the shooters rooms first. Hotel walks are exactly thick

The shooting stopped after about 35 minutes when the security guard tried to enter the room and was shot. The thought is that Paddock thought that was the end and shot himself.
The police waited another 30 minutes because the shooting stopped and they were worried about bombs and traps.
If the shooting would have continued once the police were outside the door, the belief is they would have busted in. So no, they didn't wait 30 extra minutes.

You have to make sure the other floors are clear and make sure there's no bombs set to go off on your team. You don't want anyone coming up behind you and taking your whole team out. Plus this is pretty damn hard to plan for, what you gonna do? Shut down Mandalay Bay a few days out of the year and train on how to do it quickly? Also I'm sure Vegas doesn't have enough swat to properly handle this. Maybe have the government sponsor building a 10 story replica, just a shell, of a hotel and your swat practice in that? I know these guys are in shape but can you imagine how tired they must have been finally getting to the correct floor with all their equipment on?

I can tell you as a long time police officer that it would have been hard for me to stay out of that room if he was still shooting people

Yeah I don't think there is anyway there were multiple cops outside the door just chilling listening to 100s of rounds just being fired. By the time multiple cops got there, the shooting likely had stopped.

They should have sent a rocket into that hotel room from a helicopter!
I think some of you watch too many movies.
Maybe Tom Cruise could have thrown a grappling hook from the next building over and zip-lined into the shooter's room and taken him down with some karate moves.

Rocket from chopper?
Betcha not in police armory.

Pretty easy shot really
I’ve done a lot of distance shooting with an AR. 400 yards is nothing for an AR. 400 yards when you are just shooting into a crowd is easy.
I don’t have an AR set up for distance shooting but I have a buddy that does. We’ve taken it out to 600 yards and could hit an 18” x 24” plate with some consistency using good ammo.
Even dirty, cheap 5.56 plinking ammo is only dropping 2 or 3 feet at 600 yards.
This guy could do work all day with an AR at 400 yards considering he was just spraying a crowd.

Frankly I think the guy who was standing outside listening to the shooter reign death down on innocent civilians should've sacked up and busted in the door.
I am more than trained to breach a room (I used to teach breaching methods) and a fantastic pistol shot....yet unless I have a trained four man stack with flash bangs and proper weapons I am not "sacking up" and going hey diddle diddle up the middle through that door against an assailant armed with a fully automatic weapon.

28 mins after the first shot a officer says on the scanner they hadn't heard a shot in about 10 mins, all the shooting was over in about 20 mins. What caused him to stop we may never know exactly, but I'm sure it something to do with the security guard. Either he wounded him or he spooked him enough to think they were coming in to get him and he shot himself, if he keeps shooting until SWAT is actually there and ready to breech the door it would have been a lot worse. First responders and people were all over the place in the intersection right below him if you watch the cabbie video only a few minutes after the last shots were heard. A lot more questions than answers so far for sure.

Barrett's don't grow on trees and can you imagine trying to identify the exact location of the shooter then vectoring in a sniper team to a building that had a clear field of fire on said target while trying to fight through the traffic/fleeing victims all in a timely manner?

let me try
36 minutes shooting leaves about 35 minutes time to room breach so thats not bad considering first they must remove and clear innocent people from surrounding rooms not knowing if he has a bomb or whatever may go down once they breach the door.
secondly someone slap the shite out of the idiot who thinks a helicopter should fire a rocket into the building that would require police to evacuate the entire building first and could cause all sorts of collateral damage to the building structure to come down.
lastly, im pretty sure after the shooting stopped they have to assume there might be a bomb in the room or there might be booby traps that might trigger when they enter so they need time to slip small camera devices under doors and through walls to try to see what they are about to walk into and if there are any hostages in the room.
they arent just blindly going in like rambo blasting lead everywhere killing anything in sight like you see in movies.
