but the specific event you are discussing happened in 1979.
Iran was now run by Muslim Extremists who overthrew the previous government. They took American hostages.
How modern and Western Iran was prior to 1979 is completely and totally irrelevant to this particular issue.
Overthrowing a government and taking hostages are acts of war.
and no i’m not going to “imagine roles were reversed”
because that would mean imaging a world in which:
America’s government was overthrown in a hostile take over by Islamic Extremists and turned into a Theocracy where being not muslim will get you killed. And this new extremist government begins taking hostages from free allies of the previous government.
and THAT is who we gave the money to. period.
they committed an act of war by taking our hostages.
Keeping their money was a rather tame response to said act of war.
Giving them back more than 4 times the amount we kept is fricking embarrassing.
what did we get back?
can those hostages get their 3 years back?
can they have their nightmares just erased?
can they have their memories of that shite just wiped clean?
frick no they can’t.

i mean i guess we’re arguing semantics here.
they have proven (and said out loud) that they are not accepting of America’s way of life and influence on the world.
if you don’t think foreign policy of one country toward another is not heavily based off their opinions of each other, then you are fooling yourself.

These goat lovers need to be treated like the little kid in elementary school that thinks he is a bully. They need a wrap on the beak, and be put in their place. The US put them on a budget, and approved/disapproved all purchases. I do not see the problem with this.
Either get ahead of them with financial pressure like this, or have to send US citizens somewhere to fight.
I will take option 1.

Pre petrol dollars (that the west helped discover and refine BTW) shite hole.Shah took power and made them pro western and prosperous.Extremist took over back to shite hole

Because nothing screams Western values like overthrowing a democratically elected leader who is pushing the country in a more civilized direction in order to reinstall a dictator in order to get cheaper oil prices.
