I’m not saying being born gay makes it okay or not okay…I just don’t understand how anyone could choose who they are attracted to

If homosexuals are born that way, wouldn’t a pedopile be born that way too? Bestiality?

The answer lies in your collective answer to this question:
if homosexuality is a choice, then you yourself (men) could easily become aroused by another man, simply by wishing it.
So could you?

Related question, which I think is interesting.

Doesn't society dictate, to some extent, what we find attractive?

I grew up in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The media portrayed the "perfect woman" during that time period as being the fit or supermodel-type. Jaclyn Smith, Elle MacPherson, Cathy Ireland, etcetera, and that is what I have ALWAYS found attractive. I am not remotely attracted to the "waif" perfection of the 1960s or the "heroin chic" of the 1990s.

I am DAMNED SURE not attracted to what the media is selling NOW ... wide-hipped cows with an arse the size of a small state (e.g. the Kardashians). But to young guys NOW, that cow is perfection. I feel badly for my daughters, because both of them ARE that perfect girl of the 1980s, and boys their age want a bovine Kardashian. My girls are UPSET that they DON'T have huge asses.

If society can mold our perception of what WOMAN we find attractive, can it (to some extent) mold the notion of whether to have SOME attraction to the same sex? Is that, at least in part, a reason that more young people are self-identifying as being interested in partners of the same sex?

Who knows?

That honestly confuses me…..how can anyone be attracted to both? I just don’t understand that at all.

... Bingo!
You can choose who you want to be around...
You can choose how you want to dress...
You can choose how you want to act....
But you cannot choose what sexually excites you.

"They will have some issues". What issues will those be?

100%

I don't think so.

Right. We've already noted that homosexual activity is hugely predicated on social and/or societal environment. The percentages active swing from <1% to >90%.

They are 100% born that way. You don’t just choose to like dicks. I have many gay friends. There’s not a single one who wouldn’t rather be straight.

I can’t believe people are still asking this question.

Same…my sister announced when she was 5-6 that she didn’t want to marry a man, why couldn’t she marry a woman? I always knew…. When she finally told me in our 30’s & I told her I always knew she was shocked. She thought I would disown her

In high school I knew fraternal twins, male & female, & both were gay. Always made me wonder how that happened.

Yeah, I think pedophiles probably are born that way, because just like I can’t imagine being attracted to the same sex, I cannot imagine being attracted to a child-it’s a disgusting thought. But just because they are born that way does not make it okay to act on it! Pedophilia hurts innocent children.

I am just spitballing here. I have no data and no studies, but it just seems unlikely that society is going to take a guy with ZERO predisposition to the same sex and drive him to a life of skin care products and Judy Garland records.

But as society becomes more accepting of gays, it DOES seem likely that the guy who has a genetic predisposition might give it a try, even if he might not have done so in the 1950s. Societal opprobrium would have stopped him then, but the lack of stigma now might let him try the sampler platter rather than just ordering the steak.

I stand by what I said.. "You cannot choose what sexually excites you". You can choose to act or not act on that impulse. By the way, you do know that most pedophiles are heterosexual, don't you? Adult men assaulting female children make up the largest section of pedophiles.

Did I accuse gays of being pedos?

Gays wait until they are a touch older to groom.

I’m honestly not sure. Society definitely shows us what is out there, and what is “in style” at the moment. I’m not sure it’s ever dictated what kind of man I thought was attractive though. Especially now that masculinity is considered toxic. And it sounds like it hasn’t changed your opinion of what an attractive woman is.
Like you say, who knows?

Again, just spitballing, but it seems to me that the form a given person finds attractive seems to "imprint" at a certain age. I don't know if that is just after puberty or young teen or what, but after a certain point in time, it does seem to ossify.

My dad grew up in the 1950s, and there is NO QUESTION that he has remained attracted to women of the "1950s ideal" until the current day, and the man is 82 years old.
