Looked like it hit him high left, upper /mid portion of the pictorial. I've seen people survive worse. If they plugged the hole and got him to a trauma center there is a bit of hope.
Heart is more center mass.
Not at all trying to downplay it but I know more than a dozen people with scars in that area that are just fine.
Hope he is ok.

This makes me so incredibly sad and angry, frick these people. They go online and on TV all the time and talk about how we are the ones that are violent, fascist or racist but it always them that are committing all the crimes.
