The fact he was never charged for having a weapon and a record, is a gross injustice in all of this.

Yes, his nephew. Even if you sequester the jury at this point, how do you unring that bell? Jurors will still worry about family members while they are sequestered and the possible repercussions of a not guilty verdict when they finally get to go home.

The defense needs to take longer than an hour so that the jury has plenty to use as reasoning for an acquittal (if so inclined). It will be necessary for their protection.
