Jerky can last up to 6 months without freezing. If someone is going through jerky at the clip that JE was, freezing is completely unnecessary. See the 1800s

I disagree. I think not only are they not nearly as smart as we would assume they would be, but they are also very arrogant and have a lot of power. They not only did not need to be careful, but they didn't even think they needed to be careful.
Plus, how else were they supposed to be converse with each other? I do agree with you that it seems ludicrous that anyone with a brain would use insecure methods to talk with each other about things like this but people (even high level government officials) use insecure methods all the time to communicate about sensitive stuff - even when they are required by their job to do so. Do you know how many people write down their passwords on a piece of paper and leave it near their computer? People in general aren't careful - why should we assume that these people would be any more careful than anyone else?
