In all fairness the GT program at my zoned elementary school is bullshite. Literally 60% of the classes are GT (statistically unlikely). Here is the game: Hold your kid back for an extra year of private preschool saying they are "emotionally immature". Kid is 6 entering Kindergarten and already reading. Proclaim he is 'gifted'. He's not, he's just a year older
There was even a scandal some years ago where the Vice Principal was taking bribes for GT status. Its an ego project for the parents trying to vie for spots at the best private high schools 10 years later. If kid doesn't manage to get into GT kindergarten at 6, hold em back again.
My son literally had a classmate turn 8 at the end of his kindergarten year. He wasn't retarded, he was totally normal. He just wasn't a genius, he was two years older than mine and his parents wanted him in the gifted class, so they redshirted him TWICE.

That's a strong indictment of no child left behind as fundamentally bad policy.
Kids don't need to graduate at 17, they need to graduate knowing how to read.

Sounds more like your system’s parents are bullshite for trying to subvert the system?
Even so, “gifted” doesn’t mean smart and ahead of peers. It falls under the special education window and includes a host of neurodivergent characteristics that risk causing a kid to struggle in school (both socially and academically). Yes, they’re often going to display extremely high intelligence, but their high intelligence is actually a detriment to their ability to be successful.
That’s why Mamdani and others like him are fricking pieces of shite. They use things like “gifted” to pander to ignorant voters. I can’t say how their 2nd grade child find works because I’m not familiar with NYC’s practices, but maybe they need to evaluate it more extensively rather than just say, “not even black kids so let’s get rid of it.”
Or the question no one wants to really ask: Why don’t black kids display gifted characteristics at the same rate as white kids?
