I can speak to this and you are correct. I did this twice for 8 week cycles....once at 24 and once the following year. We were designing a pipeline project and needed to meet deadlines.
Management at that time, had concluded that that would be the maximum cycle the workforce could produce before losing productivity. People began to get sick and start missing days at the 7 week mark.
The young badasses made it to the end.

You're basically gutting the idea of the nuclear family then bc how do you expect to have familial relationships and working that much? Some of the shite you guys float are insane

This is beyond retarded. Work people to death in the prime of their life. What could go wrong?
Idiot.

Amen. I started my family very early, and I worked can to can't for years so she could stay home and raise the kids. The old saying, "all work and no play" is very true.

shite! I'm 55 and love working 7-12's. It's one hell of a pay check!!!!!! Once you get into the routine, it isn't bad.
In fact I could really use some 84 hr checks!
Is this every week of your life?
I had a job in my 20s and early 30s where I worked 65-80 hours every week of my life and I completely regret it now.

Yep, I was single at the time. Definitely not practical for those with spouses or families .

You do realize that the people that you want to do this are probably already doing it. The “young lazy libs” are either going to spend those 80 hours making the productive areas of our economy a living hell or get paid an extra 40 hours to do nothing.
Not to mention, we are already having a birth rate crisis among the people I assume you would want to have kids. Taking prime child rearing years from people and making them work every waking hour will mean a way worse crash.

I remember Perot floated the idea of nationwide lights out at 9 pm.
“Now, you may say Ross, what am I supposed to do after 9 o’clock? Well, I suggest you sleep. Believe me you’ll appreciate it come that nationwide 5 AM wake up call.”

Seems inefficient to do that across the board. What can a legal assistant do in 80 hours they don’t already do in just 40? Then you’re just paying someone to not do anything

Are you going to pay for the suicide nets like they have in factories in China?
Unless you are double dipping like some NOPD officers on do nothing details, no way you are working 80 hours a week. At most I could understand stand 9-10 hour days. One hour before the office opens and one hour after.
Government offices for official business closes up shop at 5 pm and opens at 8 or 9 am, Monday through Friday. That is a traditional 40 hour week. I know there are fields like ATC and TSA that are regular shift work 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
Burn out would be huge, and some of that would be a waste of time.
Just look at some of the OT reports for government workers that have to staff for hurricanes. Some people are getting paid their regular hours because the office is closed, and emergency pay they helped out with some aspect of the emergency whether that is answering phones or fixing a failing pump during a storm for double time. And if they exceed 40 hours of double time they get double time and a half.

I don't think that's because there's something inherently noble about working 80 hours a week.
I think it's because he knows they've got a long way to go and a short time to get there. He's not trying to build character with that move, he's trying to meet a deadline under extreme conditions on a project that could literally change the course of American (and therefore human) history.
It's like people at NASA working around the clock trying to meet JFK's deadline for beating the Soviets to the moon.
I agree that people are soft these days. SO soft.
But I would start with just making sure people are working the whole time when they are actually at work and being paid. Let's crawl before we try to run a marathon.
I'm kind of a fan of some kind of mandatory civil/military service to toughen the populace, help these 18 year old toddlers grow up (since their parents won't do it) and increase buy-in amongst the citizenry.
I mean, I'd rather we had a free society instead, but we already mandate that children MUST attend school for 13 years (which is the opposite of freedom and which I never understand how it could possibly be constitutional), so if we're going to do that, what's two more years in either a branch of the armed forces or some civil service branch before going to college or trade school or entering the workforce? Does anybody doubt that spending two years after high school experiencing a military-style discipline and and lifestyle would vastly improve the employee performance of young people? (Assuming it was done well, of course).
Back to the original premise, 80 hours a week doesn't leave much time for family or church. That's not sustainable, and again, I don't think Musk is floating it as something to be sustained. I think he's staffing a temporary emergency project.

There are some hospital staff who work 7 on 7 off. The 7 on is 80 hours.

You’re going to get downvoted to oblivion, and I think the semantics of how much time is required can be discussed, but I take your point well. The best thing that ever happened to me was working a job in my 20s that required sustained periods of overwork and unreasonable demands. People in their 20s could definitely use this.
This!
Great post and ideas. However, I think it will take a lengthy transition period (several years) to get the bulk of our Gen Zers to adopt a more rigid work ethic.

I'm very good at my job. I've been in the same industry for nearly 30 years and can work much faster than most of the other guys in my office. I generally get my days work completed before lunch. Should I go back to the office once my work is done and sit around for 12 hours everyday and twiddle my thumbs? Is that productive?

There’s nothing wrong with WFH in the private industry, or where there are performance metrics that can identify misuse of the privilege.
I’ve worked 50-50 from the office and home following 100% WFH during COVID, and it’s improved my production and ability to meet deadlines. It’s much less disruptive to put in an extra hour or two regularly at night to stay caught up, and I haven’t had to use a single hour of sick leave in this time. There’s a give and take though, and it should be done in a manner that benefits both the employee and employer.
It’s a different story for most government workers, where from what I’ve seen, there’s an extremely low level of accountability.

This idea everyone needs to be "in the office" is outdated and stupid. People who function like ADULTS are responsible enough to get shite done without someone over their shoulder.

50 hrs is reasonable. I was going to say working five ten hour days mon thru Fri with a five hour day on sat or 55 hrs total.
