Common core was a national set of standards to be met. I actually like this plan. What’s so bad about saying you must know the Pythagorean theorem, law of sins, law of cosins, and the formulas dealing with circles to pass geometry as a bad thing.

Who screwed it up was all these educators who bought the newest and latest teaching methods from education companies that don’t employ any actual teachers and only sit around and talk about teaching should be, not how teaching is.

I’d actually blame this more on no child left behind forcing kids to continue advancing grades despite not being ready.

Just look was Mississippi did by making kids actually have to pass reading did to their reading scores

That was how it was explained to us as well. It wasn't a specific curriculum but rather a set of knowledge standards that were to be met by certain grades. It was up to the district to implement the curriculum to meet the standards. We never saw any of the weird math that was being pushed as part of CC. It was all pretty standard. FYI, both of my kids made 34+ on the ACT and have very generous scholarships.
The AP classes while being pretty good for college prep are being pushed way too hard (to benefit the school's stats). The state standardized testing was a joke.

The “weird” math you see in Facebook posts is actually illustrating how kids are being taught to do math problems in their heads, so it does look a bit weird when you put it on paper, but you end up with kids being able to get an answer without pencil and paper or a calculator.

Right, common core isn't the weird math. It is the layout of what is to be taught.

As said, the problem is now we have kids who can't sit still for more than 10 minutes and we are forced as educators to a different strategy every other year, b/c your central office wants to look dynamic. If I lecture to students for more than 10 minutes of notes, I am doing a bad job. NVM, we did it, scores were higher and this is what students will see in many college courses

What I have found is that the kids who started their school career inside of Common Core get it. It's been my observation that Common Core was supposed to be about uniform standards in education. Such as for example, a student needs to be proficient in long division by 4th grade or able to trad and comprehend polysyllabic words by a certain grade level. How they get to those levels is up to the individual schools/systems

Yes but that isn't completely correct----the standards say the student must be able to divide (or multiply or add or subtract) fluently using the standard algorithm AND with a model or drawing. So we have to teach a model for every skill as well. For instance, the area model for multiplication, or using squares, lines, and circles to represent ones, tenths, and hundredths for adding and subtracting decimals...circling 10 hundredths, crossing them out, and adding a long (a line representing tenths)--using a picture to regroup... This is time consuming.
I do agree with ChineseBandit58 that it's backwards. When kids are very comfortable with basic math you can start using strategies like the distributive property to multiply mentally ...but it can be confusing to them if they aren't fluently multiplying first.

I always assumed common core was a perfect way to understand how a liberal thinks. It’s like the most ridiculous way to do simple math problems.
The stupid math is meant to retard logical reasoning.

The remaining subjects are just social indoctrination.

That picture is obviously a fabrication or a lie on their credentials. That’s the hand writing of a woman who says she’s an electrical engineer. Ask any electrical engineer and there are non girls in those classes

Why do you call it a bust. CC is doing EXACTLY what they want it to do.

Fake news. The NAEP is a garbage assessment. Around 0.5% of the available grade population take the test and the demos are not representative at all. Look at your state level assessment for a better idea of how common core is being handled, if it's adopted at all.

They're just standards anyway. They have absolutely nothing to do with methods and quality of educational instruction.

Have they changed the name on it again yet? They'll change the name and vote it back in.

When LA was in charge of our own standards, I learned algebra in 9th grade.
Yeah. I don't know about long-term impact on test scores, but from what I've seen with grade school kids doing common core math, it makes a lot of sense and actually forces them to really understand numbers - not just learn shortcuts.

I do agree with this. The kids do get a deeper understanding of math concepts. My biggest beef is that there are too many standards in a grade level to cover adequately prior to testing. School ends in late June here, but testing is in early May so there is always a unit we haven't had time to teach. And we FLY through the other ones at a ridiculous pace.
