One of my favorite classic books is Robison Crusoe. In it, Robison reflects on something his father once told him. I was something like,” the middle station is the best station in life.”
I think that’s probably true. Too poor and you live in constant hardships. Too rich and there are too many temptation and occasions to do evil.
The middle is best.

Give me a billion dollars and let me find out for myself

The annuity is $1b plus. The cash payout is $602m, if you don’t do the 20 year annuity, and 24% federal tax ($144.6m) is automatically withheld from that. Doesn’t count state taxes or anything else you are currently benefitting from that you no longer qualify for due to a massive income bump.
If you go in thinking your payout will actually be a billion and spend it that way, you will get a rude awakening.

No it hasn’t, but given a choice I’d rather be rich and unhappy than poor and unhappy.

Money and alcohol just make a person more of what they already are.

money can address a couple of Maslows issues so you have free attention for higher possibilities.
its not either or.
with all survival issues addressed people can look at higher issues. not everyone wants to go to Esalen. not everyone wants to go to Rome or Mecca.

"You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you." - Augustine of Hippo
No matter if no one gives a damn about you, Jesus cares for you. He loves you. He loves me.
About thirty years ago, I was going through a personal crisis. At 2 in the morning, I found myself kneeling by my bed in the throes of despair. So disturbing the problem, I couldn't sleep. I decided to try to get some sleep. Only to toss about in bed. As I napped a bit, I had a dream.
In the dream, Jesus was standing over me, with his arms outstretched, holding back the demons. The same demons taunting me. I heard Jesus command the demons, "Leave him alone, let him sleep." I slept peacefully the rest of the night. With God's grace, I survived the ordeal. I am no saint, okay. I am flawed. But Jesus loves me. That's all that is important to me now.
Even though everyone abandon you, Jesus will never abandon you.
In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritús Sancti. Amen

I can see that being the case for the ones who give it away to friends and family and just waste it.
I just don't want to work anymore and be able to fish and golf when I want. I wouldn't change my lifestyle bc of the money. Not interested in fancy cars or mansions. A place on the beach, fishing camp, hunting camp is all I care about

From Nobel Prize winner, Daniel Kahneman:

Abstract
Recent research has begun to distinguish two aspects of subjective well-being. Emotional well-being refers to the emotional quality of an individual's everyday experience—the frequency and intensity of experiences of joy, stress, sadness, anger, and affection that make one's life pleasant or unpleasant. Life evaluation refers to the thoughts that people have about their life when they think about it. We raise the question of whether money buys happiness, separately for these two aspects of well-being. We report an analysis of more than 450,000 responses to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, a daily survey of 1,000 US residents conducted by the Gallup Organization. We find that emotional well-being (measured by questions about emotional experiences yesterday) and life evaluation (measured by Cantril's Self-Anchoring Scale) have different correlates. Income and education are more closely related to life evaluation, but health, care giving, loneliness, and smoking are relatively stronger predictors of daily emotions. When plotted against log income, life evaluation rises steadily. Emotional well-being also rises with log income, but there is no further progress beyond an annual income of ~$75,000. Low income exacerbates the emotional pain associated with such misfortunes as divorce, ill health, and being alone. We conclude that high income buys life satisfaction but not happiness, and that low income is associated both with low life evaluation and low emotional well-being.

Challenge accepted. I'm too old to care about hookers and blow.
I'd take the cash, another 20 years isn't guaranteed.
Vetted charities, trust funds for the kids, finance at least 3 Pollo Campero franchises in every state, some travel and a ridiculous classic car/military vehicle collection.
A few fully stocked "shelters" here and there.
I will never buy another boat in my life. I'm not opposed to renting.

Generally, what we think of as "happiness" is really nothing more than dopamine release in the brain. Even if you're a billionaire and can afford to buy/do anything you want, eventually the dopamine receptors don't work anymore. The human brain wasn't designed to have a constant flow of dopamine.
