I said the same thing to my family earlier this year. I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in Mardi Gras on a float. It was a bucket list item. Now that that has been checked off the list I now have no reason to ever go back to that city. I felt unsafe the entire time I was walking around the city. My 9 year old even talked the whole way home about how smelly and disgusting the city was. It really is sad.

In the aftermath of Katrina the city had a chance to reinvent itself(it also had a chance after the oil bust) yet successive mayors and city councils squandered billions and let the city regress.

Ray, Mitch and teedy all share blame.

Love all you ppl rhat visit Nola just to make a TD thread about how crappy it is

My family visited last week and we had a blast, ate at herbsaint and commanders. Walked up and down the quarter with no issues chugging delish drinks. Yeah some black ppl were standing on the corner smoking pot, big fricking whoop.

I don’t go to bourbon street at 3 am, things work out pretty well that way.

Historically yes but now? They are living off the reputation of what New Orleans was

people act like you cant have fun and eat good food anywhere else. Its a joke really that this is what people say new orleans has to offer. Oh but the food is good. I can get good food all over the south and all over louisiana.

Fact - Millions of people from all over the globe visit New Orleans every single year citing the food as a major draw.

Second Fact - Nobody is planning a trip to visit your little town's Applebees.

This and the City Park "Casino" were my "kid days" spots for me. My Grandmother lived on Dumaine right by the City Park entrance and took me to both places many times in my ever more distant youth. I also remember many Sunday mornings where the Roman Candy wagon would be parked just a couple of houses down for a few hours.

I haven't been to City Park in decades, but yeah...going to see The Flying Horses was a regular with my grandmother as well. She lived on Brooklyn Ave right near Ochsner on Jefferson Hwy and my little sister and I would take the bus with her into the city a couple of days a week when we stayed with her when we were little and my mom dropped us off there during the day while she was at work. Spent tons of time in Jackson Square feeding pigeons, going to City Park, etc. A little older I'd hang around with my Grandad (on my mom's side) who was a bookie who lived in Harahan and we'd drive around making collections and taking bets. Spent a lot of time in dive bars all over, learning to play pool with old guys.

So many of those places and all of those people are gone. In many cases so too are their families so those traditions left with them.

Imagine sitting at Galatoire’s having drinks on a Saturday afternoon and looking out the window watching 2 junkies shoot up then passing out on the sidewalk.
Our out of town guests were thoroughly impressed …

Go visit the upper east side in NY at one of their many fine establishments and look out the window.

Go visit rush street in Chicago to one of their many fine establishments and look out the window.

Go to old town Scottsdale to one of their many fine establishments and look out the window.

All small/medium/large cities have junkies laid out in the streets
