Too often, the understandable impulse to "to something" has led democracies to enact legislation that does not even really address the event to which it is responsive.

That will probably be the case here.

Shooter was 18 and you have to be 21 in Texas to purchase a gun. Therefore, the guns were not legal.

Red flag laws are simply guilty until proven innocent. A relative could say you are a threat and make something up or repeat something that you might have said in jest.

The expense you would have to get your guns back and never meet your accuser is unlawful but this would be allowed. I would bet that many people didn't get their guns back after the katrina bs.

Why anyone would believe anything being said about the psycho right now is beyond me.

Big tech scrubbed his existence minutes after the name was released.

I bet yall believe Vegas shooter had no footprint as well.

This dude no doubt had things out there pointing to some type of motivation, but they are NOT going to let it get out if at all possible.

His family called police multiple time over self harm concerns. If LE reports that to NICs like they are supposed to, his 4473 gets delayed and likely denied.

The first that jumps to mind is raising the purchase age to 21, assuming that the weapons he purchased on his 18th birthday were the weapons used at the school.
So a kid that joins the Marines out of high school can't come home and buy a pistol for personal protection?

Agreed. The heroes that turned the killers lights out have been vilified for the last 2-3 years. Too aggressive. Too mean. Too racist. Too masculine… Now it’s Too weak. Too slow. Too scared.

The only thing that could’ve prevented this, and every other act of violence, from the beginning of time until the end- is if God, Himself, were to take away free will. That will not happen- which is why we invented guns in the first place.

uhm.

I agree with your initial premise that Red Flag laws would not have prevented this, but you could easily postulate "gun control" legislation that might have done so. The first that jumps to mind is raising the purchase age to 21, assuming that the weapons he purchased on his 18th birthday were the weapons used at the school.

I am not advocating for that change ... just answering your question.
In other words, one potential solution to the OP's scenario would be increasing the purchase age. The OP did not ASK whether it was a good idea.

SIAP

21 age limit on the guns.

That gives him 3 years of adulthood to build a criminal record or other red flags.

At age 18, someone tell me how it works, even if you had a juvi record, aren't juvi records sealed? Would a background check have even found juvi problems?

In order to do that, the age of majority must be raised from 18 to 21. That would also result in the legal age to vote being raised to 21. The legal age to sign a contract (rent an apartment, buy a car, etc.) would be 21. Dems would never go for raising the age to vote. The impact of 18-20 year olds not being able to sign a contract without parental co-signer would be huge.

We don’t have a gun problem in this country, we have a weirdo problem in this country
