It’s called a negotiating tactic. Why is that so hard to understand?

I guess we will see, eh?

Regardless they're not necessary for national defense.

I am just an engineer. I am no economist. I would like someone to explain to be what this "Free Trade" is that to which you refer.

Have we ever had "Free Trade"? Tariffs were proposed by Alexander Hamilton and have existed ever since. We currently have tariffs on all kinds of products, and the rest of the world has higher tariff rates than us.

We huge tariffs on products like tobacco (~350%) and peanuts (>100%) and tennis shoes, yet people are acting like these proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum are the first tariffs ever.

I think everyone is over-reacting about the proposed tariffs. Cost of goods in the US has been increasing. Things like raising the minimum wage, increased regulations and taxes, etc. have done more to increase the cost of goods than tariffs in general have.

The problem with tariffs like Obama slapped on Chinese tires were that he did nothing domestically to help the tire industry. So tires were still too expensive to make here. So instead of coming from China, they came from other nations.

Maybe with the now lower corporate taxes and reduced regulations, tariffs make more since in Trump's economy since those companies would have a better chance at competing globally.

then their candy asses should run and you can vote for them. Trump has his own team of genius ivy leaguers helping shape his economic policy. Hearing all the bellyaching going on from the establishment makes me believe trump is on the right course

Those brilliant people you’re listening to are the same great minds who concocted NAFTA and the TPP and are responsible for selling this country out. Fair trade. America first.

Prices, even domestically will rise. Tariffs will hurt more industry than they will help. The Bush steel tariff is an example.

There's little denying it will help a particular industry. But that's pretty much the limit. Cheap products, even imports help the American consumer and also help associated industries who utilize those imports.

We have far too many conservatives that lament republicans who wont play dirty with dems in order to win, then are the first to pass judgement when they do.

We truly are the most self loathing political party on earth.

I love how everyone knows everything when it comes to something complex like the US economy. The guy ran on tariffs, and won; he is putting tariffs in place fulfilling his campaign promises. Let’s see what happens.

You're an over emotional Obama bot. It's all you are, all you do. You add nothing.

Why did you link an Australian webpage?

Besides this move is all about politics. It locks up "the rust belt" for Trump and has minimal negative side effects.

Conservatives generally like conservative principles. Trump is pushing self professed conservatives toward progressive ideology one day at a time.

I agree with some things Trump does and disagree with others. I'm not a "supporter" of any president, just policy.

Republicans in 2012:

"We need figther who is going to tackle immigration"

"We need a guy who can win the battleground states and break down the blue wall in the rust belt"

"We need a guy who won't take any shite from the media, and who hits back when dems attack"

Republicans in the age of Trump:

"Why is pos Trump willing to negotiate on daca?!?!"

"Why is pos Trump proposing tariffs to prop up American foundries in the rust belt?!?!"

"Why is pos Trump wasting time bashing cnn on Twitter?!?!"

Again, what's good politically isn't necessarily good economically.

He's got the economy humming, pretty much at full employment. The tariffs are definitely a high risk.

If I were you, I wouldn't take global economic advice from a group of Flag Officers who have spent their entire lives in the US military.

If only we had free trade, that would be a pertinent comment. We don't. We have foreign actors manipulating to artificially disadvantage US producers. It should be obvious that unfair, unfree trade designed to disadvantage US production is not good for this country.

If he is using the tariff to get nafta restructured, and potty train china a little, which it appears thats what is happening, i support it.

And as if it needs to be said for the millionth time. It takes two to tango when it comes to free trade. What we currently have with China, and many others, is NOT free trade. The bric countries, for example, are all heavily protectionist on trade.

Arent these the same guys that pay hundreds of dollars for toilets seats, muffins, and hammers and such?

You'd think the U.S. military would have learned a lesson or two about wasteful spending after scandals over purported $100 hammers, $300 toilet seats, and $16 muffins. But it turns out the Pentagon is still presiding over one of the most catastrophically wasteful militaries on Earth.

Pardon me if I cast a little doubt in their general direction on the matter of economics

Try to enter a thread critical of the administration and not mention Obama. Do that and I'll have no leg to stand on.
