He was charged with using straw donors making contributions to a senate campaign.
I don't know the details of the case but it sounds like one donor didn't want to make it known that they were making contributions so Dinesh filled out the paperwork in another persons name who didn't mind.

Point is that in an era where high ranking government officials lie to congress (among other crimes) AND boldly lie to the American people with impunity, ringing D'Souza up on this was ridiculous.
