This is not the worst idea in the world, with minimal impact. There are very, very few jobs paying less than that now, and this is a popular idea.
Terrible take. The cost of living is largely different in different parts of the country. As a business owner i would have to lay off employees to make this work.

Maybe rather than crashing the economy, devaluing the dollar, and cause rapid inflation, you should figure out a way to better yourself via education, the trades, or hard work??? I know, silly talk.

I remember when the left tried to frame him as the next leader of the Christian nationalist movement years ago
He is a RINO. Neocon foreign policy, soft domestic

This will do nothing but incentivize paying beaners under the table. Good going Josh. Additionally, how is an earnest teenager supposed to lock down his first dishwashing or landscaping job if you have to pay them $15 per hour?
Hawley extolls outrage on the Senate floor though.

I don't see a practical reason for this effort, though. And I think trying to set a meaningful minimum wage in a country as large as ours with 350m+ people is also pretty stupid.
It's not only stupid, but it also creates a self-perpetuating problem. Labor is usually the single highest regular cost a business incurs (eating up ~22%-30% of gross profits). Artificially raising that floor across the entire economy mandates prices increase on all goods and services.
This has rippling effects outward as the change isn't instant. What happens first is that employers begin cutting back on staff (total staff, hours worked or both). That means more people end up getting let go or quit in order to find a job where they can work more hours. That pushes up unemployment rates.
The cuts to hours generally aren't enough for businesses to continue to succeed so prices rise, which looks a lot like inflation.
If this is all true, then you should be able to look at the data from all the years of Minimum Wages and see impacts from years where the wage increased.
And that's exactly what we see. Over the COVID WFH period I worked with the data (1938-2020) and found:
The average annual inflation over the period was: ~3.6%
The average annual Unemployment Rate over the period was: ~6%
Along with that, the average inflation rate for just the years with a wage increase was 5.09%
The average inflation rate for the year of the increase plus the next year was 5.136%
The average inflation rate for the year of the increase plus the next two years was 4.86%
For Unemployment, the movement was very similar.
The average Unemployment rate for all years with an increase was 6.3%
The average for the year of the increase plus the next year was 7.18%
and then the next year was 6.8%
On the other hand, when we take all the years where there was no wage increase, the average inflation rate was 2.92% and Unemployment was 5.7%.
So when the Minimum Wage increases, it causes both inflation and Unemployment to rise over the next two years. Eventually, this perpetuates itself as Congress sees this as a need for pushing for a higher minimum wage which pushes costs higher and cuts jobs, which Congress sees as a need for pushing for a higher... etc.

You would have to lay off employees to make $15/hr wages work?
What sort of shitty sweatshop business are you running?

He didn't say he was making that. He said it was laughable. And it definitely is laughable. Most illegals won't even work for $7.25 an hour

Would make more sense to have an adult minimum wage and a separate minimum wage for teens IMO

I don't have an ideological objection to a minimum wage.
A minimum wage is the most cruel and inhumane government policy short of slavery. Forced joblessness.
Honestly, slavery may be better since you actually do something.

We should get rid of minimum wage

In Louisiana, the starting minimum salary for teachers is $38,000
$15/hr is $31,000 a year.
Just giving you an idea on how everyone would need to get paid more.

Right. And not a single person here could support themselves on that income.
It's shite pay.

A lot of people should be getting paid more as it is
Your teacher example just shows that they're severely underpaid as well

With that and no tax on OT, I can just go mop up at McDonald's.

I agree, far too high for what many, many people are worth. Based on output, that is too high.
All of my employees make considerably high than 7.25 starting out and get step increases in tenure and output/reliability.
These are entry level workforce jobs that are a step above fast food in skillset needed, plus tips so perfect for just out of high school or working way through college.
If I were forced to pay my employees $15/hr I would do one of two things.
Increase the price of my product to offset that new cost the state just ignorantly forced me to inherent, or close my doors and shutdown operation and move on to something else in life.
36,000 people have lost their fast food job in the last year in California since they bumped the minimum wage up, and it’s precisely because of stupid people with stupid opinions like yours.

Federal minimum wages are dumb. Leave it up to the states
