The proper move(assuming you must engage) is to actually make yourself slightly shorter, break at the waist slightly and close the space.

Now sure. An accomplished fighter can still jack your arse up even in closed space but the vast majority of people don't really develop great power with compact punches. This puncher appears to be no exception.
