I lived in Soho from the early 1970's to 2004. At first it was just artists who illegally leased loft space. The whole area south of Houston was previously textile sweat shops that all vanished when the import tariffs were dropped on India. A lot of artists, a couple of bars and a few galleries were all that there was.
The art bars became hot spots for the art patron set, and they were followed by producers and media people, actors, models and famous people.
I rented a 6,500 sq. ft. floor for $300 at the time. Some great restaurants, galleries and bars came and went. Now, it's all been commercialized resulting in loft floors that sold for $2000 are now being valued in the millions.
Balthazar on the corner of Spring and Crosby is still there.
