I had this discussion IRL with German guy (college exchange student). He wants to finish his medical school studies and file for immigration to the U.S.

Me: 'Why not practice in your home country?'
Him: 'Everything must be equal there. A dentist is a doctor. An orthopedic surgeon is a doctor. So they make the same money.'

Why is that?

Because the US has a completely weird system where neither the free market or government is allowed to take over.

The number of physicians being trained is artificially capped and the government controls the number of doctors being brought over from foreign countries. Hence, even though demand for doctors is high, supply of doctors will never reach the demand so prices remain extraordinarily high. Under a free market system where doctor supply was not capped, wages for doctors would be much, much lower.

However, hiring is not done by government and so wages for physicians are high as their supply is capped.

50% of all us healthcare dollars go to provider wages. Anyone advocating for socialized HC here is going to be complicit in taking every doctors paycheck and erasing half of it.

That’s right, but in America we have the Right to earn as much as we can for our skills and training and frankly any government that doesn’t allow that is evil. So your statement means absolutely nothing and carries no weight

I mean this isn't true, otherwise government jobs wouldn't exist.

There would be no minimum wage either and government wouldn't control the supply of labor (i.e. through immigration and capping the number of physicians).

In a free market, physicians would be paid much lower salaries because lots of people want to become doctors. However, not as many can become doctors so this results in a high salary.

That's not for you to decide. The slave holders also thought shanty homes and slop food was enough for slaves to live off.

I had a conversation with a coworker and immigrant from the Netherlands ten or so years ago, after we saw a Porsche pass on a city street.
Me: “You must see a lot of that where you’re from.”
Him: “I see many more Porsches here than in Europe.”
And he explained that it was tougher to achieve a salary to afford a Porsche there.
Not as many in poverty, but also not as many wealthy.

I said how much not how little retard. Minimums are one thing, and even that is arguably bad too.

Huh?

I'm just saying if were paying more than the rest of the world. Perhaps were paying too much.

To be fair to the doctors though, it takes a long time and everything they do is marked up crazy and insurance companies are gonna fight you to pay for it.

The insurance companies are most likely the problem in our healthcare industry

Do you want the best and brightest taking care of you or do you just want some guy taking care of you.

You get what you pay for.

Much is a quantity that doesn't necessarily mean a lot. In the context you used it, it's just a quantity as the word 'how' modifies the meaning of 'much'

i.e How much does this cost?

Said item can be a little or a lot.

And it still doesn't address that physician salaries are artificially high because government caps the level of supply of doctors in the economy.

yeah, its a lot harder and more expensive to be a dr in the USA.

I am not in any way defending the UK's system, but straight up comparing salaries isnt an apples to apples comparison.

Foreign imports should be based on capabilities and need, nothing more.

FWIW the government caps many professions with licenses, certifications, etc. I’m not an advocate for more government so please don’t take it as such. I am for the strictest of standards for someone to operate as a licensed physician.

I think we need to focus on demand, not supply of doctors. Wages for doctors in any scenario will be higher than giraffe pussy.

Why? Because as Americans we are engrossed a sedentary and overweight lifestyle burdened by modern convenience. Couple that with the “I’ve stubbed by toe, I must visit the ER” mentality… yikes.

My point: We have no business comparing our healthcare system to any other in the world. In no way is our country comparable.

We use too much damn ‘healthcare’. The solution is to focus on being healthier overall. Less demand on the system reduces costs.
