Back in the 80s when that huge survey was done, the news media was actually the least partisan (70% liberal) and sports journalists were actually the most partisan (over 90% liberal).
I think it's just a supply and demand issue. The people who love and appreciate sports don't want to become journalists, so the people who love journalism but aren't good enough for the news beat get stuck on sports duty. Thus the ever-present attempts to find deeper meaning, cultural relevancy, and create scandal.

I used to listen to The Ticket in Dallas religiously. Haven’t listened in awhile because I moved out of Dallas about 6 months ago. Thought I’d tune in on iHeart Radio a couple of days ago and was horrified. The world is over.

The Ticket has gone 100% "WOKE" since the Floyd death. It is insufferable. I have pretty much stopped listening & it was my favorite radio station of all time. Sad. They even moved Donnie Doo to the middle of the picture of all of them on their promos.

Same here in Atlanta. I used to hunt down sports radio 92.9, 680am, 790am... after getting lectured to about whatever the leftist flavor of the day is, one too many times, I haven't listened more that a few moments in a year.
I wish sports station owners would get WOKE to the reality that a LOT of fans don't want that crap and they would ban it, and fire on spot anyone crossing the line. There are a lot of people looking for work.
