re: Statues in NOLA are coming down.

I couldn't care less if the statues are removed and thrown into the lake. What I do care about is how a city so broke is going to spend millions of dollars to move a couple pieces of stone and then replace them with another stone. Our pipes are busted and the roads are crumbling. Every penny we can scrape up needs to go to our infrastructure, not this debacle.

So if that's the route we go then let's change everything. Why Preserve the quarter?

show of hands, who here has ever been black?
South Park gets it right again. white people don't get what its like to be black, as much as some of us think we can

Nope. Been outraged for years at the stupid shite we waste tax dollars on here in New Orleans like libraries and the Audubon zoo and aquarium. I'm sure you've seen the millage rates and have been just as outraged right? Or are you not an Orleans resident and commenting when you have no knowledge of the city?

That was a game changer for relations between North and South, between whites and persons of color, between Republicans and Democrats. America will never be the same again.
What is different today?
Besides the kneejerk reaction to cleanse city history?
These are the same people who want everyone to forget about Battle of Liberty Place.

Oh those evil symbols. If only we would have known sooner how historical statues and symbols create racism and hatred. We could have taken them down sooner, re-written the history books to eliminate any mention of these people, and avoided all this mess a long time ago.
Man, what a bright people we have running the show these days. So very educated and enlightened.

I'm not buying it. People are unduly fixated on this issue in a way that we aren't so into libraries and aquariums.

Your post presumes you know what it's like to be white or any other race. How's that going for you?

Should put Mitch in line for the Virtue-Signaling Champion of 2017, Gulf States Division.

Let’s be offended and change everything. I’m sure we can find something to be offended by street names, school names, statues, etc. Help add to the list. Let’s make New Orleans like every other plain vanilla city in America.
For starters,
Bourbon Street. Named after the Bourgeois French houses of Nobility. They kept the peasants poor and worked them like slaves. They are the same people that the French revolution was fought over and overthrown. How dare we name a street in honor of these authoritarian assholes who told the peasants to eat cake? I’m offended as part of the peasant class
Burgundy. Same thing. Named after the duke of burgundy who was King Louis XV of France’s father. I’m offended
St. Ann, St. Louis, St. Peter and St. Philip. Separation of church and state. Shouldn’t name public streets after a certain religions patriarchs. I’m a catholic but i'm offended.
French Quarter. The Spanish owned the area longer than the French did and now its part of the USA. I don’t like the French anyway so i’m offended. Rename it.
Napoleon Ave. Named after a dictator. How would you like naming a street after hilter. I’m sure that those nationalities that napoleon fought against are offended by his name.
Milan, Austerlitz, Marengo, Constantinople, Valence, Lyon and Bordeaux Street, all names associated with Napoleon.
McDonogh Schools. John mcdonogh own slaves. Enough said right.
You get the point. Let’s be offended and demand change. It’s the socially accepted thing to do right?

Are you serious? You think you're going to see the same amount of outrage for every millage increase as you are wasting money on moving stones? There's no doubt when you look at the millage breakdown for Orleans parish that money is being wasted on different areas. However, those things like libraries and such do "some" good. While there is waste you can still see some value. We are talking about moving stones around! How could you possibly thing the outrage would be in the same ballpark?
Please show me where moving these stones will benefit the tax payers of this city. If you can show the value I will change my opinion.

The black community should demand the tearing down of St Louis Cathedral.
1)Owned and built by the Catholic Church, huge purveyor of slaves, especially the Jesuits (google Georgetown slaves).
2)Built in collusion with the French, also a huge purveyor of slavery and even worse authors of the Code Noir.
3)Pretty sure the church was built with slave labor for modern (and ancient) day white rich brides can get married to their racist white land owner husbands.

You forgot the name New Orleans itself, named after Philippe II, and the Code Noir issued during this time.
Also, the fleur de lis itself is a racist symbol. Bye bye Saints logo. Lets get rid of it all, if any of it has to go.

This will fix everything.
Posted on 3/7/17 at 10:39 am to MorgusTheMagnificent
They are replacing the Andrew and Robert E. statues with Jessie Jackson and George W. Lee statues. The street names don't even have to be changed.
