I was being sarcastic. I dive a truck and mostly refuse to eat anything but bread, potatoes, and meat.

But, repairs and parts are not readily available AND whenever you have to replace that battery...THAT has to be a bitch!

I'd say:

You are an early adopter
The tech is pretty fantastic
You honestly desire to see the nascent transportation method take hold

If you are truly doing it for economics (personal), then you aren't necessarily the right person (this isn't the right time). But, if you fit the categories above - I can't hate you. They seem pretty cool and I hope the industry gets disrupted.

Yeah, I believe the Philippians has banned lithium mining because it was environmentally devastating.

$10 to charge seems pretty high. What is your MPG? Also, do you charge everyday? Does your charging station somehow tell the electrical grid to stop sending power to charge?

A neighbor of mine has one of the newer models (forget which one) and they are really cool, but pound for pound it seems like it's a show off car than being more efficient than the other similar type models

So, why should I buy a Telsa? I'm not really seeing it from a practical standpoint.

I would look at a Tesla, at this point, as a luxury item. So buy it if you like it and you can afford it. It's really a bad-arse golf cart that is only practical in cities where you're not traveling great distances and there are plenty of charging stations. Until the support infrastructure gets built out for electric cars they will mostly be impractical for interstate travel.

Serious question...how does difference in outdoor temp affect the range/charge on these vehicles? Seems like cold weather/hot weather would affect the range on them.

I'm not sure Tesla goes by mpg. In my hybrid, I can do little short drives and the gas engine doesn't kick on. My mpg for those little trips are 999 mpg.

I think Tesla thinks in range.

With a range of 200-300 miles, it would depend on usage. I drive 50 miles round trip, but I would charge it at home every night just to be safe.

No idea how the charging stations work. Most of them are at gas stations, so I guess you'd have to hang around the Sheetz or Circle K waiting for it to charge. That doesn't sound fun at all.

I have owned many luxury cars, my model S destroys them all. Not even close.

First of all, I paid for unlimited supercharging. So I can use the super chargers free for life. I rarely use them, unless I am travelling out of state.

Secondly, I use to spend about $200 - $300 per month on gas. From what I can tell, my energy bill has gone up approximately $35 - $45 per month since I got my car. So there is a noticeable net savings there. Never an oil change required either. So that adds up.

The real savings - NEVER stopping at a gas station. Most people fill up, 2 times a week? At a minimum of 10 minutes per pop? I park, plug in, and never have to worry about this.

They make 90 and 100kwh batteries btw, not just up to the 85.

Lastly, cars are not investments, you do not buy a car for the money savings. The things I love about my car have nothing to do with not needing gas.

The radio - slackster radio. It is almost priceless. I can listen to whatever I want, WHENEVER I want. Simply say "Play song" and it plays. If I want to listen to a comedy show , I can. It is basically like infinite pandora, but better.

Internet, the car has it's own ATT 4g internet, paid for by Tesla. You can surf the web or do whatever you want that requires internet.

The map -- it is basically a 17" IPad and it is not to be undersold. With real time traffic and google maps as well, I can barely live without it. Other GPS simply do not compare. Navigation - you guessed it, fricking elite. I can move the second display to where I want, you can tweak the size on the main screen, etc. It is top notch.

Auto-pilot? I don't have full self driving mode, but the car drives itself, none-the-less. It doesn't seem like a big deal, until you get used to it. The start up --- there is none. This seems silly but I save like 10 seconds every time I get in the car. You simply get in and go. No button, no key to turn. No waiting for the engine to turn over.

Speed? I can literally beat 99% of all cars on the road.

Safety? The car is basically the safest car ever tested. At least the 2015 or 2016 model was, I cannot remember which one.

STORAGE - I have two trucks, and you would be amazed at the amount of shite I can fit in the car. SPACE - because of the no engine, my back seat passengers have a shite ton of room.

Romance mode? That's right - hit a button and the screen turns in to a crackle fire, and Marvin Gaye comes on. I'm not even kidding!

Atari mode - again not kidding. Don't actually use this, but the kids do if I need to run in some where and they can stay in the car.

Prestige - this is a pro and a con. As I said before, I have had many top notch, expensive cars, but never one that makes people stare and approach you like this one. It can be a bit annoying sometimes to be honest.

The app - I can control my car from the Tesla app. Warm the seats, hit the AC or heat. Change the radio. Lock it, etc. Change the charging speed or amount, play the radio, etc. I can also track the exact location of the car, speed it is going etc. I can also shut it down if it ever somehow got stolen. I would just kill the car and lock the doors and the car jacker would be fricked! You can also remote start the car and let someone drive it without the key fob being present. Good for valet, etc.

I could go on, there are still more cool things about the car. But you get the point! Tesla is the real deal. I find it odd that so many on this forum are anti-Tesla.

If anyone is buying a tesla... use my referral code! You will get 6 months of free supercharging!

Seems like it would. Lots of things would affect the range.

The whole roof should be solar panels so it could self charge a bit when parked outside.

Did they even consider that?

For years, there were ads talking about the need for "cold cranking amps" for extreme cold, and in the heat that is frequently felt in the South, that kills batteries too. Just seems like it is a bit early in the development to invest in a vehicle that may or may not handle the temp range in North America.

I think they’re nice looking cars. If I had the money, I may buy one. But I also think spending $40k for any car is ridiculous.

Thanks for the post, Balloon Huffer.

It is the little things that make you appreciate a car after driving it a while.

My car has a lot of little things I've not had in vehicle before. Proximity fobs are the shite. I never pull my keys out of my pocket, but I do have to hit a start button. Like I said, my car is a hybrid so I just jump in and go in similar fashion.

I don't have the app stuff of course. All that sounds good.

One of the funniest, smallest things I like about my car is that I have the easy fuel system. It is actually nice not having to unscrew a fuel cap...

The 100kwh batteries get over 300 miles per charge, This is more then many cars.

Tesla's computer determines the range by your average kwh usage. If you average around 300 kwh, then you will get exactly 1 mile per mile that is says you will. If you drive slower then this, you will get more miles. I think someone got almost 500 miles on a charge once, but they basically went 20mph the entire time. If you drive using more power, you will get less then 1:1 rato.

You don't need the superchargers, you can plug in to your house.

I can drive from BR to Lafayette, straight to NOLA, and back to BR on one charge. WTF more would you need then that?

Pull in to the garage, plug it in, rinse and repeat.

So many misconceptions about these cars.

The main reason not to buy an electric car:

Gas stations are everywhere, electric car charging stations are few and far between.

meh...they are meant to be your daily car. Not your touring car.

If you travel more that 200 miles per day...it isn't the car for you. I don't own one. But, my wife travels less than that per week. So, our household COULD use that very nicely. We have two cars. We would take the gas engine when we travel long distances.

So, the availability of charge stations is really only an issue if it is to be your only car.
