I'm not sure why it's not OK to have pride in your heritage and the country that you've built.
The destruction of America correlates with that of Rome. A successful Empire that allowed outsiders with different interests to have a voice. Those people undermined the best interests of the Republic and it fell.

You can have a multicultural society with assimilation. The two are not exclusive. I've never said assimilation is not a good thing. The OP clearly is wrong, our society has always been made up of many cultures.
