Years ago when I was really young I had the chance to meet Senator Jeremiah Denton. I remember him talking to my Dad and some other people about John McCain and I will just say his recollection and Senator McCains recollection about McCains torture were not the same. I got the impression that he thought McCain had the chance to correct some things about his injuries that he chose to overlook. Senator Denton seemed to think being a POW didn't automatically make you a war hero. But I do think that McCain absolutely deserves respect for his time in the military. This does not mean you cannot disagree with his politics.
I have not researched it but there are probably men who were POW's with Senator McCain that question his hero status but I doubt there are any who question Senator Denton on being a hero.

I really can't stand John McCain . He represents everything that is wrong about American politics . And he is a politician, a public figure and thus fair game. He's an Establishment robot and he reads his own fawning press and believes it in his heart that he is a great man. But he's just a mediocre pol who served his country and suffered for it and parlayed that into being the aforementioned mediocre pol.
If your point is that people have lost all sense of propriety when they address people they disagree with, I'll have to reluctantly agree. I'm certainly guilty as charged.

if not for his family he would have never been allowed to fly. he was a major frick up and a dickhead by all accounts of everyone who served with him. IMO he got fricked up in the crash and took advantage of the situation to exploit to get into politics. he didn't go from outlandish disobedient a-hole to " hey im gona stay here and be tortured because i all of a sudden love my fellow servicemen" just because. are there any accounts of people who were tortured with him or saw what was he " went though"? didn't think so. dude prob had his own room with a tv and watched gilligan's island and the price as right every day.

I served with a kid who got a NAM with a V for valor for pointing in a direction we were already shooting and yelled SHOOT THAT WAY!!! ... watched him on numerous occasions over the next few years try to use his " achievement" to demand respect from people. frick him and you too.

A friend of my dad's was a POW he said he never considered himself a hero as his situation was not voluntary, he said the heroes were those that risked their life trying to find and rescue him before he was captured.
