re: Truly don't understand how anyone can consider themselves an "Independent" at this point

I vote Republican but have nothing but contempt for them. I refuse to be counted as a member of their feckless, useless “party”.

As has been explained to me, it's neither the media nor the parties that are responsible for this. It's the Constitution and state laws.
What do you think it is?

Cheney wasn’t president
Well... Not as far as his title anyway.
No President before Trump has faced the obstruction from both establishment parties like he has. We see it every day with the GOPe majority in Congress.
But cry more about "authoritariansim" from Trump... Muh NO KINGS!!!! REEEEE!!!!

Calling yourself an independent in today's political climate is like calling yourself bisexual but not gay.
It's definitely a strange identification.
IMO it always was. I know a guy who is over 50 years old, has always voted, and has never voted for a Democrat (and as far as I know, he's also never voted for a 3rd party.)
But if you call him a Republican he gets fighting mad, because he's an "Independent."
Cubbies here is like that. She obviously aligns with Democratic policies and has as bad a case of TDS as anybody breathing, but will deny being a Democrat all day long.
I think people do that because they think it objectifies and legitimizes their opinions. As in, "I don't agree with either party enough to join up, so when I say this, that, and the other bad thing about Republicans, you can know that it is an objective, unbiased analysis and not just tribal sniping."

It's in the text you quoted.
Taken straight from the answer the other guy gave that you claimed to know all about, but just weren't good at explaining.

I’m a right leaning centrist, and probably more right leaning than most of the “MAGA” in this board.

Yep...don't have the guts to do this...
Screw the Elephant and Donkey. They should use Red and Blue Lemmings to differentiate the two parties these days. What happened to independent thought?

Can someone explain to me what a two party "system" is?
There are only two viable parties. And the system is set up to make sure they stay the only two viable parties. And both of those parties are controlled opposition.

That’s really your best come back?
Super creative. Well done.
Thanks. I worked hard on that one.

Nothing, but what independent thoughts do you have that neither party proposes regarding abortion?
Taxes?
Tariffs?
Foreign policy?
Spending?
Entitlements?
Etc.
What independent thoughts are you having about those things that neither party is proposing?

Thanks, someone else already actually answered the question instead of just saying, "It's a system because it's a system."

When I say independent I'm not talking about mere party registration.
I am a registered independent.
I'm talking about the person who claims they just can't choose between MAGA/America First, or the Communists.

You think the Green Party and the Libertarian Party are viable party options?
That's cute.
That's cute.

The fact that you need it explained to you should be embarrassing for you.
Posted on 2/26/26 at 9:07 am to Sheriff Brackett
Independents are just that.
They don't toe either party line.
They don't toe either party line.

I guess I'd try that if I had bricked as hard as you just did too.
It's one thing to ask a sincere question. It's another to strut around like you know the answer—because you really think you do—and then find out you're a moron on the subject.
At least I knew I didn't know.

Explain why they're not.
Without referring to anybody else's work, that is.
