I didn’t even know we imported shrimp from china. What the hell for?

So the lowest common denominators can eat at the buffet.

If you can't afford shrimp, don't go to a decent seafood restaurant

So why do they need government protection from competition?

There’s a difference in voluntarily paying more for something because you want to support the industry and using government action to suppress the competition. I do the former all the time but I’m not a big fan of the latter.

Large countries will dump product at a loss to corner the market. It's illegal, but has happened for about 25 years now.

Yep ever since I remember China and Vietnam. A lot cheaper do to lack of sanitary measure required. They produce shrimp in nasty places over there. A lot of waste water, it would make people throw up if they knew where those imported shrimp came from.

Catfish and Tilapia are the same way over there. They feed them literal sewage and horse/cow manure

Imports destroyed us.

Sunflower county in 2003

Now

Humphreys county 2003

Now

Closed down Southfresh plant. Moorhead, Ms

Closed Wellfed plant Indianola, Ms

Closed Grainfed Plant, sunflower, Ms (though it did get repurposed to make pet food)

Producers Feed mill, Isola

Delta Pride plant, Belzoni

FishCo plant, Belzoni

Hormel Foods Farm Fresh Catfish plant. Hollandale

Grown up fish farms, empty farm houses, abandoned equipment and empty shops

196,000 water access 660 million lbs processed in 2003. Today 55,000 water acres, 320 million lbs processed. Humphreys county had 103,000 water acres, producing more catfish than all other states, counties combined. Belzoni boasted more millionaires than any city in Mississippi 30 years ago. Today, the county has less than 5,000 water acres and is top 10 poorest in the nation.

It’s incredibly sad, and this is what allowing cheap imports to ruin domestic business looks like. But hey, at least all these unemployed workers can buy cheap fish with food stamps!

Surely they've cornered it by now.

Preach brother i know exactly what you mean. It’s sad what the rural areas in the south lost from imports on agriculture and aquaculture products. We could have thrived instead of letting other countries do so.

Unfortunately, China will bypass this through other Asian markets … the typical US consumer doesn’t care where their shrimp comes from.

How much shrimp actually comes from china?

Usually it’s Vietnam, Cambodia, India, or other Asian countries.

That's what the UAW said about Japanese cars in the 70s, and Detroit looks as sad as your pictures.

I have no ill will for catfish farmers, auto makers or the producers of any of 1000 various things we all use, but how do you decide which industries to prop up? You can't prop up all of them. If it's not national security I don't see a logical place to draw the line.

If they were serving only Gulf shrimp, they still can. Win/win.

A win for who? Everywhere will raise prices. Who wins?

It isn’t the consumer

There isn’t one. Protectionism in most sectors only increases prices. It doesn’t even help domestic producers because the foreign firms find workarounds through third party nations or US distributors.
