I can respect that.
Knowing Trump's emphasis on negotiation though (and his success at it), I'd lay heavy odds Tillerson and others have advised him as to successes and failures in dealings with Putin. My supposition is those discussions are detailed, pragmatic, and have heavily influenced Trump's approach.
Think about it this way. When it comes to the US, Putin may well have a huge inferiority complex. Both he and Trump are keenly aware of the huge economic disparity of the US vs Russia. Apple's Market Cap by itself has in recent times exceeded value of the entire Russian Stock Market. Maybe Trump's information is that stroking the guy a bit could yield huge dividends. Speaking softly but carrying a big stick so to speak.
Obviously I'm just speculating. But in "The Art of the Deal" negotiation starting points are critical. Trump is meticulous about that. I don't see him needlessly pissing away initial deal positioning with anyone, much less Russia.
This is a good description of what might be an appropriate approach. I can get along with this.
What I don't like about it is that it promotes constant deception as the way of doing business, which is what Trump has promoted for years. It works in business, perhaps, but when you are dealing with nations and a democratic republic, you end up messing with the very system of justice. When everything is a negotiation and deception is the order of the day on every level, then there is no truth and no ability for the people to make informed decisions. You end up with something less than a free society.
Yeah, I know. We've been doing things this way for a long time. I don't like it though and I think it is bad overall. Even Reagan was saying "tear down this wall" and was dealing with Gorbachev behind the scenes. Trump is maybe taking the opposite approach. I get it.

Normally I would agree, but your Obama told us that Russia was a non issue. Remember his 80's called comment ?
He isn't "my Obama."
I disagreed with him in 2012 when he mocked Romney (or Democrats did).
I agreed with Romney in 2012 about Russia being our biggest geopolitical foe. I still do. I don't like watching Trump side with Putin over and over again. It makes me nervous. I don't trust him yet and am not sure of his motives.

Obama rejected it and Trump does too, apparently, as he is willing to acquiesce to Russia when it suits him.
Where did he do that?
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Both of them see Obama as their enemy, as do I.

I think it was a bad move and utterly stupid to publicly throw in with a foreign dictator who is trying to screw the U.S. every chance he gets
If this was true, why not support HRC for POTUS? Clearly that would be the worst thing for this country.

Okay. Fine. He is not siding with Putin or submitting to him.
Nothing that he says is as it appears.
His constant praising of Putin means nothing. It is just a negotiating technique for him to make America stronger.
I keep forgetting that nothing that Trump does or says means anything. I keep dealing with him on face value and I should not. None of his supporters do. It all means ... something else and is open to interpretation.
Eventually, I will get to the point where I don't pay attention to Trump either and I completely disregard him and everything he says or does. Right now, I am hoping for good and am frustrated when he appears to do something stupid.
But, the good is what others do and the stupid means nothing, so it is all a mirage anyway. Lesson learned yet again.

I am referring to todays tweet. I am fine with it. I would side with anyone over Obama. That is the point. Obama is the enemy not Putin.

Because he knows he has a better chance of strategically screwing the US if Trump is president . He knows Trump is up his arse as does everyone here

for example . . . .
quote:
We’re four weeks away from Donald Trump’s inauguration as president, and he’s already exchanging boasts and banters with Vladimir Putin over the size of their nuclear arsenals. Should we be alarmed?
It all began Dec. 22, at 8:50 AM, when Trump tweeted the following:
Donald J. TrumpVerified account
?@realDonaldTrump
The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes
. . . . Trump’s tweet may have been a response to a remark that Putin made in the middle of his annual holiday three-hour press conference—namely, that Russia would bolster its nuclear capability to “penetrate” any enemy’s missile-defense system.
This was confirmed Friday morning by Mika Brzezinski, co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, who reported that she’d spoken on the phone with Trump a while earlier and that he stood by the tweet.* If Putin wants to up his nuclear arsenal, Trump told her, “Let it be an arms race because we will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all.”

Putin did not want a POTUS angling for a US-Russia hot war. HRC would have been that POTUS.

Thanks.
If he is conducting foreign policy via Twitter, then the world has to figure out how to interpret it. I'm all for learning if this is how it is going to be. Just give some assurance that he isn't just playing politics with the solvency of American elections and I will support that. Whatever makes America stronger and more effective in doing the right thing around the world and keeping us safe and strong - and keeping war from breaking out all over - is a good thing. So, go for it.

NC_Tigah,
You actually showing me what Trump might be doing is effective and convincing. Thanks. I'm willing to be convinced. Being called an idiot and whatnot for not automatically getting it is less effective, so thanks for not taking that approach.
I don't mind siding with Trump against Putin. I'd rather do that, especially if I'm convinced he isn't putting us in a position where we have to go along with whatever Putin does now to "keep the peace." I've had enough of that.
