Which makes them the 13th or 14th in the world.

Geography

Look at where Turkey is on a map. It was vital to contain the spread of communism in eastern europe and to keep the USSR from having open access to Mediterranean Sea.
Turkey is the worst “ally” ever, except for Pakistan I suppose. They’ve threatened our air and armed forces in Syria, purchased weapon systems from our enemies, have no issues leaking our capabilities to our enemies, not to mention their recent shift toward more hardline Islamicism.
There it is. Europe (what's left of it) should not lament Turkey's departure from NATO...they should welcome it. Of course, Turkey will move toward Russia, which is highly problematic. It's a mess over there; Islam on the move, as usual; obedience to their Prophet.

What’s our reasoning for not selling them a Patriot battery?

Yes but atleast those are not NATO members.

I motion that we expel Turkey from NATO and divide its 100 F-35 jets between Ukraine and Israel. Who cares if Ukraine does not have the pilots or the money to fly them. Sitting on the ground and looking pretty is the only aspect of the F-35 that hasn't been a major f**k up.

Yeah, but how much of that army is used to control its population and internal security vs the number deployable?

Use to pay them massive subsidies to base medium range bombers, missiles, and listening stations. Modern technology has made Turkey's NATO relationship redundant.

Turkey/Ottoman’s oldest most effective enemy is Russia. When they perceive Russia as a threat they search for Russian enemies. WWI it was the central powers, and post WW II it was NATO. Now with Russia a shadow of its former power, the Turks don’t need NATO and can listen to the siren song of Middle Eastern, not European politics.

NATO should recognize that Turkey is no longer an ally.
Fortunately, the Trump Administration is forcing the issue with this move. Play NATO or play with yourself!

I love puns, especially sophomoric sexual ones!

Could this be the beginning of the end for Turkey as a member of NATO?

US & Conservatives have pushed for NATO members to do more heavy lifting and stop depending on the US for it's security. Turkey does that by getting a missille system allegedly superio/ cheaper than the US counterpart and now it's a problem?

Conservatives go from NATO bashing to anger at Turkey's defiance of this sacred Alliance.

-US also threatens Turkey ,India & China with sanctions for buying the S400 system( they all ignore the US and purchase anyway)

-US threatens / warns countries like China / India etc....not to purchase Iranian oil.

-US warns Nation's especially allies not to allow Huawei to build nation's advanced 5G networks.

The US is out of of control

I'm not condoning any of Erdogan's actions. Turkey's going to need a strong leader to keep the country intact. Last line of defense against the chaos around it spreading to Europe.

We tend to shout at our partners, and give them ultimatums.

The Russians lead with a carrot.

Their approach is working better.

And we wonder why some countries wish to remove itself from the US sphere of influence.

It is not because they bought a cheaper missile system or even because they bought a russian missile system. It is because they bought a russian missile system and the deal includes letting russian subcontractors (aka the Russian government since they bought it from a state owned company) have access to data. That sorta defeats the purpose of developing a stealth plane and all the eletctro shite that goes with it to defeat advanced missile systems.

Is your mental illness (aka liberalism) not allowing you to acknowledge that the US and NATO expressed similar concerns when Turkey tried to buy a Chinese missile system and the Obama administration cutting military aid to Turkey over the deal, the USA and NATO raised similar concerns and made similar threats when Turkey began considering the idea back during the last days of the Obama administration in late 2016, and that the deal is in violations of sanctions against Russia that were implemented by Obama? So this is not a conservative created issue, but you are too blinded by party politics to understand that.
