Break up the stranglehold the Big 4 beef packing houses have on the beef industry.
So while packing houses may be contributory, the inflation is in Live Cattle pricing.
The combined effects of droughts and Covid meat plant closures resulted in ranchers culling herds 2021-2023. Cattle inventory fell to its lowest point in 73yrs LINK, reducing supply in the face of steady demand.

We just don’t go out for steaks anymore. For around $70 I can grill 4 nice filets for a family of 4. Add asparagus and a baked potato you are all in around $80. Often there’s enough left over to add in omelets or cheese grits the next morning for breakfast.
We almost always buy from Costco, and like others have said get a deep freezer. Their pot roasts are huge and come in 2 pack, you can freeze one and save one for later.
I’m hopeful this beef pricing surge can at least level off here soon. But even if it doesn’t Ill just grin and bear.

Raise your own bovine.

Another aspect of this is the ethanol mandate. Corn is a primary livestock feed, so the mandate created more demand. More demand without a similar increase in supply creates price increases whether there is some sort of monopolistic behavior or not.
To underscore this, in April 2022 Biden suspended the federal summertime ban on E15 gasoline (which contains 15% ethanol compared to the normal 10% most people get when they fill up with E10). This suspension was still going on during this last summer with eight Midwest states (Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin) now having it in place year-round.

Purchased 40lbs ground beef for $5.50lb from Kirk Martin Slaughterhouse yesterday. Cheaper than any major grocery store locally and a whole lot fresher.
This past weekend some grocery stores in Louisiana supplied by Associated Grocers of Baton Rouge had a 3 day sale and one item was 10lb chubs of ground beef. I bought one on Friday and wished I bought more to freeze with the holidays coming.

We could also stop exporting it altogether to increase our own supply.

Beef prices are never going back to pre 2000 prices; fewer independent cattle producers, increased grain prices, and more people Worldwide are consuming beef. They can simply make more money exporting beef than selling it domestically

Here in Trinidad we get a lot of beef from Uruguay. A small country but a big beef producer. They have four times more cows than people. Global warming, global warming we doon need no stinking global warming (10 cents to Treasure of Sierra Madre).

Agreed but damn near impossible.

And climate change policies.

Got cow locally a week ago. $5 lb.
Few slaughter houses around me. Deer season so about to be shut down for a couple months.
Think wait time is around 6 months last I checked. Or 8 with deer season now.
I bought a half a cow last year and its the best way to buy beef. Mine averaged just under $5 a pound.
