re: What a SCOTUS Gift: Refunding Tariff Money to Business Would Boost Economy

Those of you cheering for what he said realize that he gave a tacit admission that the tariffs have been dragging the economy, right?
Everybody knows tariffs will drag down the economy to an extent but the goal is to produce better trade partners in the longer term. The problem is this country has no tolerance anymore for even short term pain for the greater good. Nobody wants tariffs. Not even Trump.

Whatever money they spent on tariffs, they already priced it into their products and sold them. Why the F would we refund them....unless they refund every customer who purchased from them
Right here^^^^^.
Most of the price increases from tariffs were paid for by higher consumer prices.

So yes, we are admitting that tariffs raised prices on American consumers. Good to get that established.
No, they are claiming they need to be reimbursed. So they are a business, anything that was a cost is calculated into cogs.

Wrong.
Your glazing over so much, it is hard figuring how you breath.
If imports increase, many pivoted to other methods of production, or used different manufacturers, etc etc etc.
If anyone absorbed higher costs, they pass all costs onto customers, period. If fule goes up, its passed on..etc etc

Kennedy is a fraud/phony. Definitely better than dumb bel Edwards and probably Landry but he sucks and gets a pass by most because of his one liners

It's not that binary. Many exporters lowered their price to eat some of the tariff. That's why there wasn't massive inflation. Let's say a product is usually sold from China for $100 and a 20% tariff is added. China lowers the price to $90 making the net after tariff $108 instead of $120. Retailer decides to increase the price $4 and eat the other $4. If you refund the $18, do you think any of that is going back to China?
Good explanation and on point. Idiots will still argue otherwise. It’s amazing how few people actually understand tariffs and percentages

Yes it is and I do believe the retailer eats the $4 due to market conditions at the time. One thing is clear, tariffs increased and inflation came down, with foreign business and production investment in the USA exploding.
WORD!!

Here is another example that I had come up a few months back.
Quoted a job for a data center. Customer wanted delivered price to his doorstep. No verbiage for price adjustment because of tariffs would be entertained. At the time of quotation, tariff was 25%. We quoted the job accounting for the 25% tariff but margin wasn’t great. Competitive bid and fairly large - $1M. So we got the order and shipped the product a few months later from India. When the container landed in the US, the tariff rate was 50%. So, we had to pay $500k to just get the product out of the port and delivered. Needless to say, we lost a little money on the job. All good. We took the risk. It didn’t work out.
Who do you think absorbed that hit? I didn’t pass it on to the customer. I ate it. And I didn’t magically get an 25% discount from the supplier. And now the Supreme Court says that the government didn’t have the authority to impose that tariff? You think I shouldn’t want a refund?

Oh and customs ain’t releasing the container until you pay the tariff. No terms, delayed payments, etc. Can create a cash flow issue when tariff rates keep jumping all over the place.

why would you refund it to businesses when the tarriffs are passed on to the end user? Please please Mr Trump, don't refund 400 billion dollars to the tax payers

Giving out checks like they did for covid would suck, but if they started trying to do it a couple months before the election cycle.. it could boost votes. But that's only if Democrats fake some outrage over the checks.
I don't think Democrats would be that dumb, though. Because the majority of their voters are the ones who seem enthralled with the idea of getting "free shite".
If they only send checks to taxpayers, it could backfire, because msm and Democrats would scream that the people who need the help the most.... are being neglected by trump and Republicans, and that Democrats won't support it unless all Americans receive the help.
Imo, best to not give any checks out.

so give it to businesses but not to the citizens that they passed it on to?
Posted on 2/22/26 at 7:58 pm to AubieinNC2009
I still don’t know why they shouldn’t just give it to the businesses that paid it. Then the businesses can decide whether to keep it to cover their loss or give it to customers that absorbed some of it. I would think that is better than the government keeping it.

Well the dems have said the businesses have passed this on to the customers. So we paid it why should we not get it back?

According to the posters here, no companies raised prices and passed along the taxes to consumers. So if they're right about that...yeah.
Be careful. Because according to you and others, prices should plummet without tariffs.
So we should have a booming economy and much lower prices. Right?

“Yes, I would rather Trump distribute, than give it to companies that have ALREADY RECLAIMED IT THRU RAISING THEIR PRICES TO THEIR CUSTOMERS.”
Lsugolf is such a poor business owner he ate all his tariffs
He believes he’s entitled to a “refund” because he thinks it’s magic if you raised your price or negotiated your purchase such that the producer (who chose to produce in a foreign country subject to tariff) bore the tariff.
He’s the guy in the supply chain that got caught holding the bag because his business practice is to do nothing and be surprised when you get run over
He’s so proud of the way he conducts business he’s now shared it in two threads with no self awareness how it makes him look
And the best part is…….. he voted for Trump 3 times!!!!! He claims. And is STILL surprised by tariffs!!!!!

You give it to people who will spend it in the end. That's what helps from bottom to top
And of course... midterms

Too messy to figure out. Like I said, I absorbed a big chunk, my customers absorbed some, my customers’ customers absorbed some.

We will still hit our goal of $200M in 3 years but probably miss our profit number depending on where tariffs settle.

I want a refund because the tariff amount I paid was based on an unauthorized executive order.

Yes I am proud of the company I’ve built and the jobs I’ve created. People seem to enjoy working for me. I pay them well. And I have good relationships with my customers. Think I’m doing the right thing. I’m blessed.

I did. Surprised by the uncertainty. And unauthorized use of them.

I believe SCOTUS was extremely clear POTUS is able or "authorized" to apply tariffs. The mechanism he used in this case known as IEEPA forced SCOTUS to say no to a portion of the existing tariff base.
Now I am very surprised you are surprised.
